The World Assembly for Mental
Health (WAMH) is gathering some of the main organizations
promoting the current deadly psychiatric system, including
official representatives from the
World Bank and World Psychiatric Association.
The World Assembly for Mental
Health will not meet unopposed.
Outside the Vancouver
Convention Centre, Support Coalition International is
holding a human rights rally, on Sunday, July 22, 2001, from
3 to 5 pm, during the WAMH opening.
Activists from a half dozen
nations who have personally experienced human rights
violations in the "mental health system" will
address the legal rally, which includes guerilla theatre
with straight jackets and giant hypo needles.

The World Federation for
Mental Health has allowed its main Congress to be taken over
by psychiatric drug companies, the World Psychiatric
Association, and other organizations promoting the
globalization of human rights violations in psychiatry. WFMH
refuses to disclose the amount of psychiatric drug company
money going to the Assembly. This is the main place the
World Bank is promoting its new "mental health
division."

For the second year in a row,
hundreds of psychiatric survivors, mental health clients,
advocates and others have united and stopped a bill that
would have vastly expanded the power of psychiatry. AB 1421
is apparently dead, at least until January 2002.
The proposal would have made
it easier to commit, and it allowed judges to order people
living out in the community to take psychiatric drugs
against their will. Similar proposals have swept the USA.

nation-wide model for "mental health" by next
year.
A current PACT worker in
Tennessee has decided to break the silence about what it's
like to work inside a PACT team as a token "consumer
peer specialist."
