BRIEF ALERTS: Human Rights/Mental Health

1) JUDGE DECIDES: FORCED SHOCK OF PAUL MAY PROCEED
State Supreme Court Justice W. Bromley Hall finally issued his decision this morning, April 16, 2001: Paul Henri Thomas can be given up to another 40 forced electroshocks over his objection, starting as early as this Wednesday or Friday.
Paul has already received that much or more forced electroshock during his more than one year of captivity in Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center in West Brentwood, New York.
ACTION: The court of public opinion must be reached.
Please forward this news to friends, colleagues, media, and all appropriate places on and off the Internet.

2) RAE UNZICKER REMEMBERED:

Rae Unzicker was a powerful heroine for the psychiatric survivors' human rights movement who died last month after a lengthy fight with cancer. Justin Dart and others remember Rae's triumphant life:

3) PROJECT CENSORED GIVES MINDFREEDOM AN
AWARD FOR EXPOSING PSYCHIATRIC DRUG COMPANY FUNDING OF CAMPAIGNS FOR MORE FORCED DRUGS
On Saturday, April 28, 2001, Project Censored gives an award for a MindFreedom story that made the "2001 Top Ten" list of under-reported stories. The award will be given during the "Press Freedom Conference and Alternative News Media Exposition" in San Francisco, California.

4) MAD PRIDE EVENTS TO BE HELD JULY 2001 TO PROTEST GLOBALIZATION OF PSYCHIATRIC HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS -- GERMANY, UK, USA, CANADA.
Did you know the World Bank now has a "mental health division"?
Does that give you a sense of mental and emotional well being?
This is one of the concerns to be raised by MAD PRIDE events this July 2001 in UK, Germany, USA and Canada.
Vancouver, Canada will be the scene of a nonviolent legal protest of globalization of psychiatric human rights violations on Sunday, July 22, 2001, 3 pm, in front of the Vancovuer Convention Center.

5) CALIFORNIA HUMAN RIGHTS STRUGGLE HEATS UP, AGAIN

Once more, Calf. Assemblymember Helen Thomson (Davis) is
pushing a harsh bill attacking the human rights of people labeled with psychiatric disorders. This one is even worse than last year's AB 1800, which was defeated by hundreds of psychiatric survivors, mental health consumers, advocates and allies.
For a news release from the California Network of Mental Health Clients, and how you can fight back:
http://www.mindfreedom.org/mindfreedom/news/010412.shtml
Meanwhile, the main organization pushing for Thomson's bill is itself split by inner turmoil. Since board president Brian Jacobs fired the editor of their journal and ordered pages of the journal glued shut (really!), boards and members in Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Stanislaus and San Jacinto counties have been rebelling. (Brian has turned down offers to see a psychiatrist about his own sticky problems.)

6) NEW ISSUE OF SUPPORT COALITION'S PUBLICATION IS AT THE PRESS, AND IS RE-NAMED "MINDFREEDOM JOURNAL"
Support Coalition's award-winning publication -- _Dendron_ -- has now changed its name to _MindFreedom Journal_.
The issue is at the printer right now.
SCI wanted the name to more clearly reflect SCI's campaigns for human rights and alternatives in the "mental health system." The new issue -- #44 -- is packed with 64 pages of news, resources, letters, cartoons, poetry, color cover, etc.
If you are not a current SCI member, then you may not receive this new issue. You can fix that in two ways.
Join SCI now on SCI's secure web site by VISA/MasterCard at http://www.MindFreedom.org.
Or e-mail your pledge to join now to SCI's office at <office@mindfreedom.org> . Include your postal mailing address and ask for a sample copy.

7) IT'S U.S.A. TAX DAY -- DON'T LET YOUR TAX DOLLARS
GO TO FORCED PSYCHIATRIC DRUGGING IN YOUR OWN HOME!
Congress and the Bush administration are considering giving more taxpayer money to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) to promote their "Program of Assertive Community Treatment" (PACT). PACT can involve coerced at-home psychiatric drug deliveries using court orders.
NAMI has been secretly using millions of dollars in psychiatric drug company funding to campaign for PACT.
ACTION in USA: E-mail your Congressperson and the federal government to say "no" to your taxpayer money going to fund at-home forced psychiatric drug deliveries! More info:

8) NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR RIGHTS PROTECTION
AND ADVOCACY 2001 MEETING WILL BE HELD IN NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK -- NOVEMBER 1 TO 4, 2001
One of the main gatherings of advocates and activists working for human rights of people labeled with mental disabilities is the National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy. NARPA was a founding sponsor of Support Coalition International. For more info:

9) _TIME MAGAZINE_ PACIFIC EDITION EXPOSES
PSYCHIATRIC DRUG EXPERIMENTS ON YOUTH, QUOTES SUPPORT COALITION ACTIVIST
Did you know that psychiatric researchers in the USA and Australia are experimenting on teens by giving them powerful neuroleptic psychiatric drugs *before* they have even been diagnosed "schizophrenic"? Even though neuroleptics can cause brain damage and addiction, the researchers say it's worth the risk to "prevent schizophrenia."
