Services won another Temporary Restraining Order (TRO).
Paul will not be electroshocked
tomorrow, or this weekend.
And this temporary restraining
order may be extended by a full panel
at least until the end of the actual hearing on Paul's shock.
This is the second time Paul's
attorneys have obtained a TRO. The
first TRO had recently been lifted by Justice W. Bromley Hall.
It turns out Paul was indeed
scheduled for forced electroshock tomorrow;
but that scheduled forced shock is now *cancelled*.
Appellate Division Judge Leo F.
McGinity granted the TRO today,
until a full four-judge panel starts to consider the matter
this Monday. Technically, this
four-judge panel could quickly rule
against Paul on the TRO, ending the TRO immediately. But
more likely a ruling will take at
least several days. The best the four-judge
panel is expected to do is to extend the TRO until Paul's
*actual* hearing about forced electroshock concludes.
BACKGROUND ON THIS MONDAY'S
HEARING [CORRECTION]:
The second part of Paul's
actual shock hearing will be on the forced electroshock
itself, and is scheduled for this Monday, March 12, 2001,
at 9:30 am at the Central Islip Court Complex, before Suffolk
County Supreme Court Justice W. Bromley Hall inside the
new *federal* courthouse. Unlike the cramped "court
room" inside Pilgrim
where the first part of the hearing was held on the issue
of competency, this facility has plenty of room for
spectators, supporters and
media. [Correction: The date in the news release sent out
earlier today said "March 9"; the correct date is
"March 12."]
It's unknown how long the rest
of the forced shock hearing will take,
but it is expected to extend several days past this Monday.

The four-judge panel on the TRO
is not to be confused with the actual hearing
this Monday before Justice W. Bromley Hall about Pilgrim's
request for an order to give up to
40 more forced electroshocks. The
four-judge panel will begin to decide about extending the
TRO on the very same day Paul's
actual hearing on forced shock begins,
but in a separate proceeding, in a separate court room.
