Emperor Hadrian under whom the building has been reconstructed, dedicated it to "all the Gods". In the 7th cent. AD Bonifacio IV transformed the heathen temple in a catholic church. Remarkable the marble floor and the dome.

Originally it was the mausoleum of emperor Hadrian, afterwards it served the popes as a fortress.
