AN INITIATIVE TO PROTECT THE WOODY PATRIMONY OF FIRE

Since 1980 OIKOS protects a territory of 6.000 hectare in the south-west of the capital of fire. The main activities, carried out with the help of Italian and foreign volunteers, are the following: surveillance of the territory, patrol of territories in risk and the immediate intervene in fires.

Summary of the project:

The projects are lasting 3 weeks each, the first one starting in June.
Activity of surveillance of a territory in the outskirts of Rome and of fight against woody fire through the mobilisation of volunteering and the sensitisation of citizens. The activity is carried out with the help of the forestall Corps of the State and the Civil Protection office. The volunteers will have the task to participate actively in this program.
6 volunteers (4 male, 2 female) can participate to this project.

The volunteer:

The driving-license and a fluent English are indespensable. Moreover the volunteers have to be very motivated, in a good physical condition and to be able to work in group.
After being instructed in antifire intervention techniques, volunteers will take an active part in the association's anti-fire structure, carrying out controls and making interventions on starting fire.
Volunteers will be engaged in the organization of the internal services and in preparing the lunch, while dinner will be prepared by a member of the association. Volunteers will also work in the kitchen-garden following biological methods.

Support:

Together with the socio-linguistic and technical support, periodical experiences of group-dynamics will help to develop the experience of the volunteer and will offer him the possibility of self-experience and self-reflection.

Working-time:

The volunteer will have to work 30 hours a week, other 6 are dedicated to formation. The working-time, however, is to be seen as elastic and will be weekly arranged together with the volunteer depending on the needs. The volunteer will be formed in weekly meetings of discussion.
The volunteer will have, depending on the requirement, one or two free days a week. Within the project also moments of recreation are foreseen.

Board and lodging:

The volunteer will be hosted in the association which is seated in Spinaceto, a south quarter of Rome. Meals are provided by the association.

Integration:

Meetings with experts in civil protection within the association, with other volunteers of this sector and volunteers of the association already experienced in international youth exchanges will take place. The participation to meetings and collective manifestations will be organised and supported.
