In principle, this division between organism and environment is quite similar to the figure-ground division an artist makes when he draws the outline of an object on a sheet of paper. The point is this: just as the artist's figure and ground are both parts of the sheet of paper, so the organism and its environment are parts of the observer's field of experience.
