Objectivity has been deserted, left high and exposed, by subjectivity [03.22.98]
A fault has occurred in our reason. One half of our
modern rationality has dropped sheerly away, leaving the cliff
face of scientific and political objectivity towering uselessly
over the void.
The strata of reason, thus violently sundered, continue at a
lower level, but they are unrecognizable from above. Objectivity
has been deserted, left high and exposed, by subjectivity.
This drop away from rational conformity has been given visually
in a number of striking and original ways, some of which are now
so familiar to us as to have been accepted as features of our
world without having been examined for their meaning. We have
grown familiar with the sign without ever taking seriously its
signification. ....
The body is the outward and visible form of subjective intention
and meaning. It is the encoded form of a message constantly
emitted over the last decade: the message that there has been a
mutation in our sense of what is right and wrong. What was
acceptable once is so no longer. Everything has to be thought out
again.
