ORGANISATION:
Blanchardstown Area Partnership (BAP), Dublin
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: Joblink
The Blanchardstown area comprises of large housing estates with unemployment
rates as high as 70% to 80%. There is also high numbers of lone parents and
early school leavers. BAP develops new and innovative combat programmes, as well
as managing existing ones. A new service called 'joblink' is a local employment
and training service targeted towards the needs of the long-term unemployed. 'Joblink'
has 5 centres established in the high unemployment areas in Blanchardstown.
TASKS OF THE VOLUNTEER: The volunteer/s would be involved in 'Joblink'.
They would be based in the joblink centres working with the other staff in
helping to find the unemployed suitable jobs.
SUPPORT SYSTEM: A member of staff will be dedicated to: assist in the
introduction of the volunteer/s to the agency; monitor the satisfaction of
volunteer/s in the placements; provide on-going support; co-ordinate a programme
of cultural and ongoing orientation activities.
ORGANISATION:
Boomerang - Cork Young People's Theatre Company, Cork
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: Theatre
activities
Boomerang's main objective is to make theatrical activity and related artistic
activities available to young people in Cork city and county. Weekly drama
training workshops are held in the city centre, providing training for young
people (disadvantaged) in all areas of theatre and stagecraft. Education and
Community Programmes have also been developed, reflecting Boomerang's commitment
to reaching as many young people as possible.
TASKS OF THE VOLUNTEER:Tasks for the
volunteers to include: Set construction assistance, leader training, experience
practical stage experience and technical assistance. There will be also be a
small amount of project administration. All activities will be working with
young people.
SUPPORT SYSTEM: Boomerang will provide all
the necessary support for the volunteers. The volunteer will have the
opportunity to meet with a broad spectrum of young people on account of the
structure of Boomerangs' activities.
ORGANISATION:
Camphill Communites of Ireland, County Kilkenny
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: Camphill
Communities of Ireland were founded in 1971 and are based on the idea of Rudolf
Steiner (1861 - 1925) who had emphasised the spiritual nature of man and had
written extensively about the care and development of handicapped people.
Although the Community has its own character the central theme of Christian
caring, recognition of the dignity of people with mental disabilities and the
putting aside of material needs by the co-workers as part of the giving and
sharing of lives makes Camphill so special. As far as capital for housing and
funding of running expenses are concerned, Camphill is supported by the
Department of Health and Enviroinment as well as the local Health Boards.
Funding for additional vital facilities such as workshops, community halls etc
fundraising and private sources of funding.
TASKS OF THE VOLUNTEER: Participating in
school, work and social life with children and persons with special needs. They
will be working in three places, School, Training Centres or adult community. At
school they will be class helpers - dormitory parents and will help with general
care for the handicapped children. At the training centre they will be helping
in training workshops and help in general care of the adolescent's. In the adult
community they will work in workshops, hosehold and on the farm and gardens with
our handicapped adults. They will be engaged in general care for the adults.
SUPPORT SYSTEM: The life in the project is
community based. The community operates as a support system for the volunteer.
Introduction courses will prepare the volunteer for tasks to be undertaken. All
of our centres have German speaking long-term co-workers at hand.
ORGANISATION:
Clare Youth service, Co. Clare
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: Clare youth
services provides youth work service and training programmes for disadvantaged
youg people. It has a full time staff of 26 and an annual budget of £ 750.000
approximately. The project of hosting a volunteer will focus on work with
disadvantaged young people. The volunteer will work with a team of staff who
work directly with about sixty young people who are early school leavers. The
objective is second chance education, socialization programmes, drug education,
and leisure and recreation activities.
TASKS OF THE VOLUNTEER:
* working as a youth leader with disadvantaged young people on
programmes of recreation and leisure.
* working as a tutor on education programmes involving literacy and languages
SUPPORT SYSTEM: We have been hosting
volunteers from other countries for five years now and have a support system in
place involving a number of our staff.
