Organization: Jugendorganisation Bund Naturschutz, Monaco

Description:

The Free State of Bavaria with about 11 million inhabitants is situated in the south-east of Germany adjacent to Austria and the Czech Republic. It is to be seen as an industrialized agricultural part of the Federal Republic.

Project: Studienstätte Weilerhof

The "Jugendorganisation Bund Naturschutz" in Munich is the Bavarian branch of the BUND Youth which is the autonomous non-party political and non-denominational youth organization of the German Federation for the Protection of the Environment and Nature. It runs a project in Großostheim/Unterfranken which is called "Studienstätte Weilerhof", an association for a new way of agriculture, social and cultural development.

Tasks: Working in the field of botany issues, keeping animals in their rural environment and taking care for insects and other tasks refering to environmental themes. Basic knowledge of German.

Support system: Guaranteed through qualified staff.

Integration of volunteer: Seminars, excursions and workshops will be offered, activities on a local and a regional level will be organized.


Organization: CVJM Feriendorf, Herbstein

Description: The holiday village "CVJM Feriendorf" is situated in a conservation area in a sparsely populated region of the Federal State of Hessen. Most of the people living there commute to Frankfurt-city.

Project: Holiday village

A holiday village and a big camping area for young people and families. The holiday village aims to support the inter-denominational Christian youth work and adult education. The conservation of the countryside and taking care of animals such as sheep (sheep breeding), goats, ponies, geese, ducks, hens and bees are elements of the project. Christian values are the base of living and working together.

Tasks: The tasks of the volunteer depend on his/her skills and abilities. There are different possibilities such as conservation of the countryside, taking care of the animals, looking after guests, helping in the large kitchen and taking part in environmental pedagogics. He/she will help and guide participants in the project, develop ideas for games in environmental education, studies of the local flora and fauna, organisation of specific events, creation and development of a nature trail.

Support system: The head of the holiday village will look after the volunteers.

Integration of volunteer: There are different associations of neighbouring villages offering activities like sports, carnival or issues of tradition. Participation in fairs and auctions for sheep. Getting in touch with guests.


Organization: Jugendwerk Aufbau Ost e.V., Berlin

Description: Berlin is the capital of Germany with about 3.4 million inhabitants. It offers a variety of places which are of cultural and historical interest.

Project: District Neukölln

A communal day care centre with environmental orientation for children in the Berlin district Neukölln. A group of about 15 to 18 children is looked after during daytime. It is a day care centre specialized for children who are partially deaf. The centre undertakes the care and upbringing of the children whilst they are at the centre. The staff influence their work with ideas from their daily life and environmental issues to the activities of the centre.

Tasks: The volunteer will assist in the social and ecological activities of the centre. He/she will help in the everyday duties, but will not replace any personnel. The volunteer will support the qualified child care worker in the day care centre for children who are partially deaf and need special care. They will bring new ideas and pedagoical methods to the establishment.

Support system: There will be a tutor for the volunteer.

Integration of volunteer: There will be 5 one-week-seminars where the volunteer is teached different things about child care and environmental/ecological issues.


Organization: Technologie Berufs und Bildungszentrum Leipzig e.V., Lipsia

Description: Leipzig is a city with about 600 00 inhabitants and is a very important cultural centre of the federal state of Sachsen. Service industry is the main economic factor, scarcely producing trade.

Project: Social integration

The registered non-profit making association "Zukunftswerkstatt e. V." in Leipzig is a recognized voluntary body for youth welfare aims at the integration of socially disadvantaged young people into society. This is realized through projects in different fields (ecology, social issues, building operations). The organization tries to set up a network with associations and corporations in the town and the region Leipzig in order to realize their organizational aims.

Tasks: Assisting in the different project fields a) ecology: watching and describing the environment in order to establish a balanced ecological system b) social: caring, educational or domestic activities in mobile social services c) building operations: planning and practical activities in building projects with non-profit making character.

Support system: There will be tutors in the projects and additionally there will be staff which is pedagogically qualified.

Integration of volunteer: Participation in cultural and leisure-time activities, guided tours in Leipzig, excursions to other towns and regions of interest, sports activities can be organized as well.


Organization: Naturfreundejugend Gotha e. V., Seebergen

Description: The district Gotha is situated in the federal state of Thüringen. The region is characterised by agriculture and a few towns with collapsed industrial structures. The unemployment rate is about 15 %. The area is also of ecological interest since there are a lot of nature reserves.

Project: Activities for eldery people

The Young Nature Friends of Germany (Naturfreundejugend Deutschlands) is an organization for environmental protection, tourism and culture. The Nature Friends run a self-help workshop for bikes and its activities together with a youth group and a scheme for an informal education as "detective for the environment". The projects' main focus is to develop and experience leisure-time activities for children and young people in rural areas. The other principal activity is to care for the local elderly and to organise and promote free time activities for them.

Tasks: The volunteer will help to organize leisure-time activities for elderly people and to provide social services for them.

Support system: There will be a tutor and a team looking after the volunteer.

Integration of volunteer: Participation in excursions and trips of the regional group of Nature Friends and be integrated in club life.


Organization: Internationaler Bund (IB) - Walsmühlen / Freiwilliges ökologisches Jahr (FÖJ), Walsmühlen

Description: The federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the very north of Germany is the most sparsely populated area of the Federal Republic. There are only about 1,8 million inhabitants living in an area of about 23 000 square kilometres. Craft, shipbuilding and fishing industry will characterize the economic future of the region.

Project: "Wollmanufaktur Stove"

The International Federation (IB) is an independent organisation in the field of youth services and vocational training. It is a politically non-aligned and non-denominational organisation. The IB runs the "Wollmanufaktur Stove" which is a workshop where products from sheep wool, linen, wood and horn are produced traditionally. It is planned to publish a documentation about traditional craft skills.

Tasks: Traditional craft skills can be aquired on one hand and a documentation about those traditional craft skills is to be published on the other hand.

Support system: There will be qualified staff who care for the volunteer.

Integration of volunteer: Sighseeing tours and cultural events are going to be organized. Workshops and seminars concerning ecological issues and activities to learn to know about work and life are offered.
