WORKCAMPS IN TURKEY

In 2005 OIKOS organises in collaboration with Genctur, a local non-profit organisation, several workcamps in Turkey.

GENCTUR , which was established in 1979 aims to improve relations between Turkish youth and the youth of other countries and to develop cultural understanding through its activities. The association believes that youth travel and voluntary service aid peace and international, intercultural understanding and diminishes prejudices. Since 1979, GENCTUR has organized 654 projects all over Turkey. GENCTUR’s workcamps offer very close contacts with the local population and make volunteers enjoy the Turkish hospitality as well as the nature, delicious food, nice weather, history and culture.

The camps are open to young people over 18 coming from all over the world and have an average duration of 2-3 weeks.
The fee of participation (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) is 80,00 Euro and has to be paid when applying for a camp. 
The camp-fee (including board and lodging) is 50,00 Euro and has to be paid to the camp-coordinator on arrival in Turkey.

Work: Talented volunteers on drawing are welcome to paint the outside walls of a youth center. The center is used for summer camps especially for teenage groups. It is by the sea side. Volunteers will create a mural on the walls surrounding the youth center.

Location: Yeni Sakran is a small town in the west of Turkey, 70 km. from Izmir. T: Istanbul.

Accommodation: At the youth center. Sleeping bag is not necessary.

Food: All meals will be supplied at the center.

Language: English

Notes: Volunteers must be able to plan and create a mural by their own.

Work: Devrek is a big town with 50.000 inhabitants and famous for hand made, wooden walking sticks. It has already hosted 3 workcamps in the past to paint the classrooms of 2 schools & practise English.with the pupils. This year volunteers are going to work with Anatolian High School students of 14 -17 years to practice English.

Location: Devrek is in the north-west of Turkey. Nearest city is Zonguldak. Terminal: Istanbul.

Accommodation: In the dormitory of the school. Sleeping bags and mats are not necessary.

Food: Will be supplied at the school canteen.

Language: English.

Notes: Volunteers need not to be a native speaker but must have a good level of English. A motivation letter must be sent  with the application form. 

Work: GENCTUR is going to organize a summer camp for a group of kids between 10-15 years old in a youth center by the seaside. If you like children, these camps are very good opportunity for you to spend your time in an active holiday camp site, in order to offer the kids an active holiday by teaching them to use their own abilities while entertaining them. Practising English will be part of your job as well. You will be guiding a group of kids during the trips outside of the camp site.

Location: Yeni Sakran is by the Aegean Sea, in west of Turkey. The next city is Izmir.

Accommodation: In 3-4 bedded rooms with toilet and shower. Sleeping bag and mat are not necessary.

Food: Will be supplied at the campsite. The counsellors will eat together with the group of children whom they are responsible for.

Language: English. 

Notes: Genctur is looking for vols who are at least 20 years old with a good command of English and some abilities on one of the following fields : any sports (like basketball, volleyball, swimming, football, table tennis, etc.) fine arts, handicrafts, music, drama, photography. Previous experience will be preferred and a motivation letter, should complete your application form. Volunteers who can participate both periods will be preferred. The first 2 days of the camp will be spent in Istanbul for preparing the camp and the orientation meeting. Accommodation will be provided free of charge. Thus volunteers should arrange their arrival for the morning of 24.06 (or 14.07)

Work: Sarkoy is a seaside town where the population triples in the summer season. The asphalt material that covers the roads in the town is planned to be replaced by paving stones. The volunteers will help the municipal staff for paving the roads by the stones.

Location: Sarkoy is in the northwest of Turkey. The next city is Tekirdag.

Accommodation: In a dormitory with shared bathrooms and showers.

Food: Will be supplied in the dormitory. 

Language: English.

Work: Volunteers will enjoy swimming in the lake, trekking on the hills, local food, close contact with the locals, while practising English with the kids of the town who are between 9 -17 years. 

Location: Sapanca is in the northwest of Turkey. Nearest city is Sakarya. 

Accommodation: In prefabricated huts. The sleeping bag and mat are not necessary.

Food: Will be supplied at the campsite.

Work: The primary school of a small town called Yokusdibi need some renovation work both in the garden and inside of the building. The location is perfect for nature lovers and quite far from the city life. The altitude is 1000 m. The volunteers will help a skilled person to cover the surface of school garden with concrete to get rid of the mud and to set up basketball and volleyball fields on it.  The indoor walls of the school will be painted as well.

Location: Yokusdibi is a small town in the north-east of Turkey. Next city is Ordu.

Accommodation: In the school, sleeping bag is necessary.

Food: Will be prepared by the volunteers by using the given food.

Language: English.

Work: The town municipality & the local association for Protection of Environment are planning an awareness campaign in the town about the re-cycling and collecting the garbage separately. The volunteers will distribute brochures prepared by the municipality together with children group of the association by visiting each house in the area. There will be also a garbage collecting work in the mornings in different parts of the town.

Location: Egirdir is in the west of Turkey. Next city is Isparta.

Accommodation: In a dormitory.

Food: Will be supplied in the dormitory.

Language: English.

Work: Sakarya is on of the big cities which was badly affected by the earthquake in 1999. Many schools have been destroyed because of the earthquake and new ones were built right after, in safe areas. EN-KA Foundation has established a private school where it covers all the costs of the school and students. Most of the pupils have lost at least one member of their family in the earthquake. We had a very nice experience during the camp last year and thus planned a 3 weeks work camp for this year. Volunteers will practise English in classrooms with the school kids who are between 10-15 years old. Apart from practising, social activities like chess, sports (swimming, basketball, volleyball, athletic), drama, handicrafts, in & outdoor games, music & dance will be held. The English teachers of the school will be leading the project. All lessons and activities are planned for the mornings, afternoons are free.

Location: Sakarya, is in the north-west of Turkey.

Accommodation: In the dormitory of the school.  The sleeping bag and mat are not necessary. 

Food: Will be supplied at the school.

Language: English. 

Notes: Volunteers need not to be a native speaker but must have a good level of English. Experience on the activities mentioned above and willingness for working with children, being patient towards children will be a plus to be selected. A motivation letter must be sent with the application form.

Work: The roads of the Yukari Gökdere village needs to be repaired to get rid of the mud. Thus the hospitable locals are waiting for the international volunteers to help them for paving the roads.

Location: Egirdir is in the west of Turkey. Next city is Isparta.

Accommodation: In the village guest house.

Food: Will be supplied in the guest house.

Language: English. 

Work: The governorship of Osmaniye is going to host around 50 young students from the city, for a special 2 weeks holiday at a youth center by the lake. This holiday will offer a great opportunity for the students to meet foreign young people, to practise English and to learn about each other's countries and cultures. Volunteers will encourage the local youth to speak English through daily activities like sports, in-outdoor games, discussions, info days, competitions, arts and crafts, music, etc. Experience with teenagers will be a plus. As there are 2 camps at the same site, it is possible to participate in both camps and stay for a month.

Location: Osmaniye is at the south east of Turkey.

Accommodation: At the youth center, in dormitories for 4 people. Sleeping bag and mat are not necessary.

Food: Will be supplied at the center.

Work: Iskilip is a traditional settlement in Central Anatolia. The municipality of the town is aiming to give a better looking to the old looking houses of the town by whitewashing them.  The volunteers will help to realize this aim.  Work is sometimes on scaffolds. 

Location: Iskilip is in central Anatolia. Next city is Corum.

Accommodation: In a dormitory with shared bathrooms. Sleeping bag and mat are not necessary.

Food: Will be supplied at the dormitory.

Language: English.

Work: Taskesen Village of the province was selected as an « exemplary village » in the region. Now there are a lot of different projects to develop the village and to make it a real example for the other villages of the region. Arrival of the international volunteers will be also an example for the region.  Volunteers will do several types of renovation work like paving the streets, painting the facades of the buildings, creating green areas and playgrounds for the children.

Location: Tekman is a town in far east of Turkey. The altitude is over 1000 m. The next city is Erzurum.

Accommodation: In the village school on mattresses. Sleeping bag and mat are not necessary.

Food: Will be supplied in the village.

Language: English.

Work: The primary school of a small village of Tepekoy is inviting the international volunteers to paint the school and rearrange the garden by various manual work. In return it offers the local hospitality.

Location: 19 Mayis is a town in the north of Turkey. Next city is Samsun.

Accommodation: In the school building, sleeping bag and mats are necessary.

Food: Will be supplied by the locals.

Language: French

SPECIAL CAMPS

Please note that there is no work in these camps but the mentioned activities are tought to participants. Thus, in order to cover the cost of  accommodation, food and materials there is an extra fee of 320 €.
 

Work:

These camps are suitable for creative people who are interested in photography, painting, pottery, drama, yoga & rhytim as well as the amateur or skilled artists of the arts mentioned above.
People who like to share experience and learn from each other are welcome. Sight seeing tours, jeep safaris, excursions, dia shows are being organized during the workshops.
No manual work will be done. Workshops will be held in the following fields of arts:

Location:  Fethiye is by the south Aegean Sea coast. The camp-site Kayakoy is a small village and an ancient Greek settlement. Nearest city is Mugla.

Accommodation: Under tents. Sleeping bag and mat are necessary.  Tents are supplied but you can also bring your own if you want privacy.  

Food: Will be served in a restaurant, open buffet. 

Language: English
