WORKCAMPS IN MEXICO

In 2007 OIKOS organises in collaboration with VIMEX (Voluntarios Internacionales Mexico), a local non-profit organisation, several workcamps in Mexico.
 

The fee of participation (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) is 80,00 Euro and has to be paid when applying for a camp. 
The camp-fee (including board and lodging) is 170,00 Euro and has to be paid to the camp-coordinator on arrival in Mexico.

SPANISH COURSE

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY FOR ALL THE VOLUNTEERS

These Spanish Courses were designed for those volunteers that have no knowdlege of the Spanish language and for those volunteers that can not speak a good Spanish but they wish to take part in one of our workcamps. The main idea is that the volunteers “fell like in their own home”.   

When somebody visit a country and  know a litlle bit the local language they feel more motivated, more secure during the  travel and of course they  will fell more comfortable at this country. 

We believe that this course will be very helpfull for the volunteers that will come to our workcamps  because they will have the chance to be in touch with the locals. They will enjoy more their  time in Mexico with the knowledge of the language.

Spanish Course offers to you:

·        3 hours daily of  Intensive Spanish course  language with professional teachers 5 days a week.
·        Material: theory and workbook, notebook, pen.
·        Lodging in a close  hostal with breakfast for 5 nights
·        A trip in the town of  Mexico  City
·        The Spanish Courses will be at Mexico City   

At the end of the Spanish Course a conference will be given. This conference will address different topics as the volunteer work, goegraphical situation, idiosincracy of mexican people and mexican culture.

After the Spanish Course the volunteers will be sent to their work camps. Besides learning some spanish this will allow them to know each other and develop a support group.

Project: Help orphan children from indigenous communities in the south of Oaxaca (South east of Mexico). Project coordinated by Ciudad de los Niños,  TOCALTZIN and VIMEX. 
History of “Nuestro Hogar Nazaret”:Nuestro Hogar Nazaret is an institution which goal is to help orphan children from indigenous cummunities as well as poor and handycapped. This help consists of providing them with skills which would help them to earn a living once they grow up.
The familly Perez Hernandez  donated the land “Los Aguajes”, where the construction of the infrastucture is taking place.
The mission of this home is to help children; children with no parents, lack of affection, lack of economical and human resources. All of these circumstances keep them from having an adecuate and dignified development.
Our work is formative. It is about education but not only in the academical sense. It is about spiritual and human values and technical skills.
In the other hand the NHN provides a service to society. Through the projects it tries to address social problems as poverty and family abandon.
Every child has the right to have a family able to satisfy his/her needs. However this is not the case in this region of Oaxaca. In the south area of the mountain chain of Loxicha there are many children who don’t have a family to take care of them and give them love. These are the children to whom the program is addressed giving them the option of a different and better life.

Work: The volunteers will be sent to “Los Aguajes” land where we are building the NHN facilities.  In this land which used to be a ranch we are building dormitories, kitchens, dining rooms, classrooms, a chapel and bathrooms. There will be several kinds of activities as:  building huts and other structures with wood, cleaning and fertilizing fruit trees, plant orchards, carry stones for buildings and cleaning paths.
No special ability is required for the volunteers. However knowdlege on architecture, carpentry or construction would be very usefull.
Inmedieant needs are cleaning and fertilizing the fruit trees; building the kitchen, dining rooms, dormitories, classrooms, chapel, hanging bridge, bathrooms. The volunteers will live and work at "Los Aguajes”

Location:The land “Los Aguajes” is five hours away by bus from Oaxaca City and 5 hours from  Puerto Escondido.
The ranch is a beatiful place, some sort of paradise. There are plants, water (3 rivers), animals, waterfalls, forest, etc. It is quite isolated from any town or city. Free time will be at nights where fires can be made. Bring ideas, games, songs, riddles, anything you can think of.

Accommodation: In the huts at the ranch “Los Aguajes”. Living conditions are very basic. No electricity, lots of clean water. There is a bathroom but no showers (you can design one). Wooden stoves. It is a hot and humid area (25ºC in May, 12ºC in January and february).
Food will be provided. Volunteers will have to cook their own meals. Food will be bought before arrival to the ranch.

Special Requirements: To be flexible about the work, open minded, lots of motivation, be creative, tolerant and easy to addapt to the living conditions in the place. Willing to be in contact with the people from the place. Don’t come only as a tourist, no alcohol and drugs. People with knowledge on planting, carpenter work and construction will be very usefull and highly appreciated.

Notes: Bring with you: The “Los Aguajes” it’s a  warm place around 25ºC very similar to Oaxaca City. As in Oaxaca there are some colder places. Please bring shorts, pants, old clothes for work, strong shoes to walk and work, mosquito net, hand lamp and batteries,  a warm jacket for the nights, sleepingbag or hamok, security glasses, cap or hat, mosquito repelent, suncream, sunglasses, a nice book, card games, photos of your life, camera and any medication the you may need (drugs and medicines are hard to find in this area) and finally a raincoat just in case it rains.

Language:English is the oficial language. Some knowledge of Spanish will provide a richer experience but is not necessary.

Project: The Project  is developed in cooperation with  VIMEX and Unión de Pueblos Chocho-Mixtecos A.C. This organization helps to organize groups of peasants with a high level of margination. The goal of this program has a regional reach. The zone has 4 communities that have the need to preserve their grounds from erotion.

Work: The work is with indigenas mixtecos. The objective of the project is  to recover the ground,  to improve the production and alimentary development of the families. The work consists to preserve the ground and water.
Nowadays the need to recover  grounds and water is bigger than ever. That is why we require volunteers for making studies, projects and capacitation in: Conservation of grounds and water, improvement of native seeds  and fertilize the soil with organic fertilizer, irrigated garden vegetables and fruits by dripping technique, conservation and parking of fruits, vegetables and seeds, volunteers with knowldge of techniques of agriculture and all related with organic fertilizes will be appreciated. But of course any volunteer interested in this work is welcome.

Location: The community is at San Francisco Teopan  Coixtlahuaca, Oaxaca. It is two hours  from  Oaxaca city, in the main road from Oaxaca-Tehuacán.The weather is fluctuating from 30º to 8º C.

Accommodation: The volunteers will live and work in the communities that are integrated in the Union de Pueblos Chocho Mixtecos. They will have simple rooms with electricity, there are not toilets inside, there are latrines outside the rooms.The meals will be provided in one of the houses of the town.

Special Requirements: To be flexible with the work and the life conditions of the place, open minded, motivated, creative, tolerant with enthusiasm to work and socially commited.  The people will be very happy to speak with you. Please, bring modern/new technics about all of these topics that you have in your country. Give the best of you.

Language:English is the oficial language. Some knowledge of Spanish will provide a richer experience but is not necessary.  You will have a strong daily contact with the locals, and they are very motivated to give you the welcome in their communities
