WORKCAMPS IN FRANCE


In 2007 OIKOS organises in collaboration with JEUNESSE ET RECONSTRUCTION, a local non-profit organisation, several workcamps in France.

The fee of participation (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) is:
175,00 Euro for 2 weeks
200,00,Euro for 3 weeks
and has to be paid when applying for a camp. 

Age limit : 18 to 30 years old (except social camps : 20 to 30 years old)

Common languages used in the camps : English/French or French/English depending on the composition of the groups,

Work: You will participate in agricultural work, planting and harvesting; maintenance of the buildings, the installation of folds for animals in the pinewood in front of the house, in the restoration of the access path to the farm and in the vegetables plantations. As the farm also runs as a biological farm, with hosting of visitors, you may (if you wish) participate in preparation of meals for visitors

Location:Located a few kilometres from the center of the village of Tret en Provence, the farm is in the middle of the vines, in front of the Sainte Victoire (a preserved mountain). Nearest towns: Marseille (30 minutes), Aix en provence (20 minutes)

Accommodation: In the main house, one room for the groupf of 4 international volunteers, space available being quite reduced. All facilities are available. Activ members of the association live in the house (4 persons permanantly). Shared meals for lunch; volunteers organise and take diner on their own. Nb : homestay type requires effort from everyone. No internet access in the hous, no TV. There is a library on Trets where books can be lent with internet acces (however, the farm is isolated from the village centre, at 4 km). Bring some games for evenings.

Age: The camps are open for young people between 20 and 30.

Note: there is no campleader; volunteers work under supervision of the active members of the association. Group is composed of 4 volunteers only. Volunteers should be interested in contributing to the development of the project; to work at different tasks according to the needs; be ready to share one room with other volunteers, respect the rules of home stay and common family type living.

JR07/308 to be confirmed Bedeilhac

Work: Supervised by the members of the local association, you will participate in the first phase of the project which consists in improving the access path that goes to the Tower. It is steep and needs to be made practicable for the advancement of the project. Furthermore you will clear the area and sort out the stones laying around the site which will be useful for the reconstruction work (2008 phase). Your work will consist in clearing out the bush and trees, leveling and preparing the path.

Location: Altitude : 600m. 150 inhabitants. The small village of Bedeilhac-et-Aynat is located in the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains, in the Saurat Valley which climbs up to the Port pass, a privileged passage point for the Tour de France cycling race. 5km from Tarascon-sur-Ariege, this quiet valley is surrounded by peaks and is connected to the Ariege Valley which leads to Spain. Nearby: the towns of Ax-les-Thermes (30km) and Foix (20km) and the principality of Andorra. Possible free time activities: hiking and cycling tours, the Bedeilhac Cave, many historical sites (castles, churches, etc...), and outdoors sports (canoeing, ...). Exchanges with the members of the local association who will warmly welcome you.

Accommodation: You will be accommodated in a community building in Bedeilhac, in dormitory style with kitchen and sanitary facilities. We cannot accommodate you if you arrive before the starting date of the workcamp.


JR07/316 to be confirmed Beaumont

Work: You will work under the supervision technician for the renovation of the outside walls and the modification of the entrances of the former school of Beaumont. Situated next to the townhall building, the school dates back from the beginning of the 20th century, and it requires a “freshing up work”. Various masonry work, and probably the fitting of new doors need to be done. NB: you might have to work on scaffoldings.

Location: The small village of Beaumont (120 inhabitants) is very typical of the Gers district. It is situated at about 8km from Condom; one of the most important towns of the area. This district is very famous for its gastronomy, its Armagnac liquor and its “laid-back” way of life. Nearby cities: Auch (50km), Toulouse (150km). Possible free time activities nearby: hiking and cycling tours, cultural visits (castles, churches, typical villages...), a very rich architectural heritage, museums, typical regional farm products making, vineyards.  Beaumont has also the particularity of hosting a castle which the property of Eve Ruggieri (quite famous journalist and writer in France), but also has a Roman-style church from the 10th century.

Accommodation: You will be hosted in the school building, in dormitory style, kitchen and sanitary facilities are available. We cannot accommodate you if you arrive before the starting date of the workcamp.


JR07/321 to be confirmed Bernac

Work: Under the supervision of a technician, you will participate in the maintenance and restoration of “capitelles” (kind of stone houses, typical housing of this region which used to shelter the local peasants) and “garennes” (stone structures which were used for rabbit raising). Your work will consist in clearing the bushes around the site and rebuilding some of the capitelles.

Location: Brenac is a very beautiful village of about 150 inhabitants, located in the Aude department, in the Cathar country, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. Its architecture and heritage are remarquable and very well preserved. Possible free time activities: wild and preserved nature to discover, between forests and Middle-Age heritage with very beautiful viewpoints. Nearby Brenac: a lake, Cathar castles, the medieval city of Carcassonne, Perpignan and the mediterranean coast. Sports activities: hiking, cycling, outdoors sports (canoeing, rafting)

JR07/211 17.06.2007 - 07.07.2007 Clerieux

Work: With a municipal employee, you will work at the restoration of a stone wall, removing of former plaster and recoating, painting of metal fences.

Location: At the heart of the “Drôme des Collines”, between Vercors and Coteaux Ardéchois, between Romans and Tain l’Hermitage and 20 km north of Valence, you will find Clérieux, a farmers’ village, that also had a rich industrial past with its grinding and its factory of fabrics. Its medieval past has left ramparts and a castle. Today, this dynamic town of 2,000 inhabitants, who participate in many associations’ activities enjoys a huge demographic growth. Possible free time activities (you can organize them, at your expenses, with the coordinator): excursion to Romans with a visit of the shoe museum and of the old town; discover the towns of St Donat sur l’Herbasse, Hauterives (the “Facteur Cheval” palace), Tain l’Hermitage (cooperative cellar, chocolate factory), of St Marcellin, of St Antoine l’Abbaye en Isère; sport (hikes, football, swimming), lake of Chambos; excursion to discover the Vercors; meeting with other workcamps.

JR07/107 24.06.2007 - 14.07.2007 Busset

FRENCH SPEAKING

Work: The workcamp will consist in restoring the traditional washing place of Busset. This municipality already hosted a workcamp in 1994. Work : cleaning of river the bed, to cutting two trees, to remove plaster and put new plaster with lime on the outside walls external of the construction, to clean the tiles (to remove moss with a brush), to restore some wooden steps to access to the washing place, to restore two low walls. Work on scaffolding for the walls. You will be led by a communal employee and an assistant.

Location: Busset is a rural village of 800 inhabitants, which is located at the south of the town of Vichy, close to St Yorre. This village owes its fame with its castle built in XIIIth century and which was the property of the branch (not reigning) of the descendants of Saint Louis. The municipality, located in altitude, offers a pleasant environment and a remarkable view on the Bourbon Mountain and the green countryside of the neighbourhoods of Vichy. Close towns : Vichy (12 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organise a visit during the workcamp. Animations possible on the spot: welcoming drink, football with the local club, bowls, meetings with the Feast Committee, visits of local heritage with Association " à côté de Busset », Feast on the 07/07 organized by the Firemen (meal + animation + fishing contest), meal offered by the municipality, meal in the families, international meal, visit of the medieval castle of the 13th century, tennis, hiking possible in the neighbourhood. Animations in the neighbourhoods: Visit factory of St Yorre mineral water, swimming pool in St Yorre, visite of Vichy, Exchange with the skate club of Vichy planned, visit the hippodrome, exchanges with the workcamp of Espinasse Vozelle.
TERMINAL: Vichy

Accommodation: : In a communal building, with facilities (shower and WC) on the spot. Possibility to have a kitchen at 50 m. Possibility to use showers at the municipal sport grounds. Lodging near the work place, and close to the village. One small grocery store in the village; other shops in St Yorre (at 5 kms).

JR07/120 24.06.2007 - 14.07.2007 Jaleyrac

FRENCH SPEAKING

Work: Opening the trail :  clearing and transportation of brushwood. Restoration of a bridge and three fountains :  cleaning off the moss;  rejointing. Help with the organisation of the village festival :  put the stands up and help with the food and refreshments. The volunteers will be guided by a local employee and supervised by elected officials. There will be two work groups. You might work on a small scaffolfing for the bridge.

Location: Jaleyrac, a town in the Cantal Departement situated in the region of Auvergne, is a rural town of 383 inhabitants.  It has a panoramic view on the Auvergne volcano chain and the Limousin  mountains. Jaleyrac, a picturesque flowery village hides under its soil the treasure of a XII century church.  In addition, there are lots of other assets to discover such as its fountains and bridges. Although Jaleyrac is situated in a deep funnel-shaped valley, the village is on a flatbed of 370 metres.  Nearby city: Mauriac - 5kms. Jeunesse and Reconstruction will organise one visit during the workcamp.  Possible free time activities:  participation at the village festival on July 1st.  Welcoming drink; initiation in fishing; international meal;  a visit of the village and especially of its Roman-Bysantine XII century church;  hiking and sightseeing the surrounding area;  evening gatherings at the local bar. Surrounding free time activities: excursions around the area such as walks along the Dordogne river; visit of Mauriac, excursions to Salers and Le Puy Mary. TERMINAL: Clermont-Ferrand / Aurillac

Accommodation: Dormitory in an old  school. Common showers and toilets near the school.  Kitchen in a room next to the Town Hall. The lodging is located in the village center and is situated at an altitude of 400 m. Short walk to get to the workcamp.  No shops in the village but there is a coffee bar.

Work: Sharing of the life and activities of the companions, organised around the collecting, fixing and selling of second-hand articles in the community shops. The volunteers will be associated to the daily tasks carried out all year round by the companions. The work will be shared in three stages:- first week: participation in the works of the community at Etoile (daily life, welcome, sale). -second week: prospection at Valence, in small groups. - third week: collect following the prospection. Attention : the last Saturday, you will participate in the selling of collected items (decision to grant the result of the selling to a solidarity action).

Location: Located at 10 km from south of Valence, in the Drôme, Etoile (4,500 inhabitants) is a town which overhangs the valley of the Rhône. Its village, at the heart of the enclosure of the 15th century, reveals an architectural heritage of quality: church, stone houses, chapel and castle. As for its country, it is characterized by very much diversified landscapes (edge of rivers – Rhône and Véore - , agricultural and fruit-bearing zones, hills and woods). The community is sheltered in a priory at 1.5 km from the village. Possible free time actvities (you can organize them, at your charges, with the coordinator): discover of Crest (visit of the tower, abseiling...), and of various sites of the Drôme valley such as Die (old town, and cooperative cellar), Saillans (magnagnery), Aouste (oil mill)...; visit of the town of Valence, Montélimar (museum of the miniature and manufacture of nougat), Romans (the shoe museum); excursion to discover the Vercors; sports, rides, hikes, swimming, canoe (Drôme); the lake festival at Etoile; meeting with other workcamps. Organisation of days with topic, in order to develop exchanges.

JR07/207 24.06.2007 - 14.07.2007 Bourg Argental

Work: The municipality has a pedestrian trail that needs cleaning. You will do this clearing and cleaning work, and repair public furniture along the train in order to make it safe for use by the public.

Location: In the south east of France, and south of the Loire department close to Ardeche department, discover a town in the middle of the Natural reserve of Pilat, at the junction of three rivers. The village is attached to the district of Saint-Etienne, and has developed its own specificity between the towns of Annonay (Ardeche) and Saint-Etienne (Loire). It offers a very pleasant environment to live in, with all facilities (transport, shops, services) and allow everyone to live according to their wishes. For those fond of history, Borough-Argental owns a large number of vestiges which testify of the richness of its past. Many visits of villages and towns rich of art and culture are possible: Annonay, Lyon, St Etienne, St Julien Molin Molin Molette... The Natural reserve of Pilat offers many possibilities of discovery.

JR07/100 01.07.2007 - 21.07.2007 Lavaudieu

Work: Installation of stone steps to create a way to the river (during 2 weeks) : levelling of the ground to put the steps. On the 3rd week, you will restore the woodworks (framing of windows, doors, of a balcony out of wood) in the gardens of the Abbey: cleaning of the woodworks and varnishing (during 1 week). Work can be physical for step creation. You will be led by a specialist.

Location:  This charming village developed around the abbey bénédictines, built by the founder of the Abbey of la Chaise Dieu, Robert de TURLANDE. Often chosen by fims makers, Lavaudieu hosted  the team of the movie "les Rivières Pourpres" in spring 2003. The benedictine abbey established in the Middle Ages turned the valley of Senouire into "the valley of God" and gave its name to the village. Nested in a peaceful woody small valley, overhanging Sénouire, Lavaudieu (9 kms east of Brioude) attracts many tourists and people fond of historical inheritance, amongst other things thanks to its classification as one of the most beautiful villages in France". / Population: 230 inhabitants/Close towns:  Brioude (10 kms), Issoire (43 kms), Puy en Velay (54 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize one visit during the workcamp. Possible animations on the spot: welcoming dring by the municipality, Exchanges with association the Friends of Lavaudieu, Visits of the village, bénédictine abbey with the Friends of Lavaudieu, Canoe kayak with a local association, climbing, discovery of everyday life in a rural village at the beginning of the XIX° century illustrated and guide in the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of Haute-Loire, international meal, river Sénouire, hiking. Possible animations in the neighbourhoods: Visit of Brioude, swimming in Langeac (discovery of the gorges of Allier), renting of moutain bikes in Brioude, swimming pool in  Brioude, Visit the castle of Paulhac and Lespinasse.

Accommodation: In the old school, in the village centre, close to the working place. Altitude: 550 m; no shops in the village, shops in Brioude (10 kms).


JR07/108 01.07.2007 - 21.07.2007 Espinasse - Vozelle

Work: Restoration of the old courtyard of the school: removing of the  plastic constructions to open the courtyard as it was before, restoration of the outside and inside walls (made of bricks and cobs). In the schoolyard: to sandpaper and repaint game modules for children. Installation of underground of young space: to install storage boxes out of wood. You will be framed by the communal employees. You will be divided into 2 or 3 groups. It is possible that you work on scaffolding for the courtyard.

Location: Espinasse-Vozelle is a rural village of 700 inhabitants in the heart of Limagne Bourbonnaise region, which is part of the Community of agglomerations of Vichy. The village is located in the western end of the territory of the Community. Espinasse-Vozelle has a primary school which host each year approximately 70 pupils. The municipality wishes to preserve this school and the life that it brings to the village. The municipality is caring for the children but also of the teenagers of the village. The project of a youth centre will be carried out. As of this summer, this centre will be open, and will allow to establish links between among teenagers. Close towns : Vichy (10 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organise a visit during the workcamp. Animations possible on the spot: welcoming drink, Exchanges and meetings with the young people by the means of the youth centre, Participation in the festival of 14th July, meetings with the club of Edlerly people, excursion in the neighbourhoods with the inhabitants, football with the local club, international meal, visit of the borough and its church. Animations possible in the neighbourhoods: Visit of Vichy, sporting in the sport Center in Vichy, Visit Castle of Billy, meeting with volunteer of Busset workcamp.

Work: You will be guided by a professional sculptor who used to restore historical monuments. Delighted to share his know-how, he already guided several workcamps. Volunteers must be committed to the project. Students and people fond of built heritage are expected. Restoration of a fountain: building dry-stone walls in order to delimit the fountain, building of steps made out of stones in order to go down the fountain. Restoration of the roof of a washing place at Les Coissards: restore the wooden frame and the roof, change the tiles. You will possibly work on scaffolding.

Location: The small village of Montmorin is located in the Puy de Dôme region, next to Billom, east of Clermont Ferrand. It belongs to the St Dier-billom grouping of towns. Montmorin is a small rural village divided into 40 hamlets, and located in the middle of a valley. Nature lovers are expected. Population: 525 inhabitants, Altitude: 630 m. Towns nearby: Clermont Ferrand (25 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction organizes one visit during the workcamp. Work: You will participate in the cleaning of retaining walls: clearing of the vegetation, digging of the joints; and in the replacement of the missing stones and redoing of the plaster.

Location: Located between Valence and Montélimar, Livron is a necessary passage on road N7, for the holiday makers of the Mediterranean region. its landscapes is made of valleys, with the junction of the Drôme and the Rhône rivers, Livron offers the possibility to do various hikes on river banks. The old village located on the “hillock”, reveals a panorama on the Ardèche and the Drôme valley. Possible free time activities (you can organize them, at your charges, with the coordinator): visit of Livron (the old village, the channels...) with the president of the “Amis du vieux Livron” association, evenings with the inhabitants of the district... Discover of Crest (visit of Tower, old village, concerts...), and of various sites of the Drôme valley. Many excursions at Valence, and at Montélimar (museum, manufacture of nougats), at Romans. Work: The restoration work that will be started has been planned for years by the municipality. In 2006, clearing and cleaning work was done by a group of international volunteers. This year, you will work on the restoration of a building (small masonry) with the help of a specialist who has led volunteers’ work for years.

Location: Located at 10 km south of Valence, in the Drôme, Etoile (4 500 inhabitants) is a town which overhangs the Rhône valley. Its village, at the heart of an enclosure of the 15th century, reveals an architectural heritage of quality: church, apparent-stone houses, chapel and castle. As for its countryside, it is characterized by very diversified landscapes (edge of river – Rhône and Véore -, agricultural and fruit-bearing zones, hills and woods). Possible free time activities (you can organize them, at your charges, with the coordinator): discover of Crest (visit of the Tower and abseiling, old town, night activities) and of various sites of the Drôme valley such as Die (old town and cooperative cellar), Saillans (magnanerie), Aouste (oil mill)...; visit of the towns of Valence, Montélimar (museum of the miniature and manufacture of nougat), Romans (the shoe museum); excursion to discover the Vercors; sport: rides, swimming, canoe (Drôme); lake festival at Etoile; meeting with other workcamps.

Work: Under supersivion of the volunteers of the Association Limonest Patrimoine - for the work of the “Batterie des Carrieres” you will have: to restore the stones of the enclosing wall, to clear an opening on the shooting platform and to rebuild a low wall and a staircase. For the second project, volunteers will work under supervision of the “Association de Sauvegarde des Lavoirs des Monts d’Or” (associaton that preserves traditional washing places). Work will consist in restoring one of these traditional washing places : restoration of the roof and masonry work to restore the water ways.

Location: Located near the Mont d’Or, Limonest offers, at a few minutes fromLyon, an exceptional situation in which natural and built heritage are very rich and varied. Limonest has a population of 2850 inhabitants and a surface of 897 ha including more than 65% in natural spaces. Many excursions are possible. Limonest (old town hall, presbytery...), Poleymieux (restoration of a lime kiln made by an international workfcamp), cellars of the Beaujolais wine, several excursions in Lyon (many museums, etc.);

Work: The workcamp will be divided in two major moments: The first week : under the supervision of a specialist, you will participate in public utility work in the village (not yet determined, manual work). During week 2 and 3: in collaboration with the organization and the volunteers of this festival, you will take part in the preparation, the development and the closing of the jazz festival: handling and the assembling of the equipment, the preparation of the stages , selling of entrance tickets, drinks, and finally the cleaning and disassembling of the stages... Attention: a certain flexibility in the work is required according to the needs of the festival.

Location: Altitude: 340m. Located at 20km North-East from the town of Figeac in the dry plains of the Causses region, Assier is a charming little village with a rich historical past. There is a castle from the Renaissance period and also a fortified church. In spite of this small size (550 inhabitants), the village is very dynamic and has received more than 1500 spectators during the festival in 2006. Possible free time activities: the Padirac cave, visits of the towns of Figeac and Rocamadour. Sports: canoeing, hiking and cycling tours, football games with the village youths. Cultural events: the Assier Jazz Festival!

Work: With a municipal employee, you will take participate in the enhancement of the communal sports grounds: removing the old fences, and replacement by new ones. In nearby hamlets, you will restore basins and walls: work of traditional masonry.

Location:Vercors is mountains that keeps many traces of a rich past (cultural and natural), is a fragile and very popular territory. It is with the aim of reconciling the protection of the natural and cultural heritage, with the economic development that Vercors was classified in 1970 "regional Natural reserve". Created in 1985, the natural Reserve of the high plateaus of Vercors with its 17 000 hectares, remains currently the largest Natural Reserve in France. Located at the foot of the Grand Veymont (highest peak of Vercors: 2341m), it shelters many remarkable species. There is a central footpath making it possible to walk from La chapelle en Vercors to Gresse en Vercors. Many other excursions are possible, as well as mountain activities: spéléology, climbing, canyoning.... Discover typical villages of St Agnan, Vassieux, Pont en Royans, famous road of Combe Laval. Restoration of the wall (50 meter length, 2 to 3 m in height): rebuilding of certain parts of the wall (especially top), masonry work: jointing and installation of the stones / Help with the organization of the village fête: installation of stands, kitchen, disassembling, cleaning

Location: Salins is located at 7 Kms from Mauriac where the river Auze crosses a 30 height meters basaltic escarpment. The pleasure of the tourists, it is to pass under the waterfall and to arrive at an excavation. At the end of the cave, the fountain of the Druids was used to cure the cutaneous diseases. Population: 150 / Altitude: 710 m (bring warm clothes) / Close Cities: Mauriac (6 kms), Aurillac (45 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize a visit during the workcamp. Location: Town of 13,000 inhabitants, Issoire is located 35 km south of Clermont Ferrand, between two natural parks: the Auvergne Volcanoes Park and the Livradois Forez Park. The Allier river runs through Issoire and attracts many canoe riders in the summer. During the workcamp, you will benefit from one week of the international folklore festival, big event for this town. Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize one visit during the workcamp.
