WORKCAMPS IN FRANCE


In 2007 OIKOS organises in collaboration with JEUNESSE ET RECONSTRUCTION, a local non-profit organisation, several workcamps in France.

The fee of participation (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) is:
175,00 Euro for 2 weeks
200,00,Euro for 3 weeks
and has to be paid when applying for a camp. 

Age limit : 18 to 30 years old (except social camps : 20 to 30 years old)

Common languages used in the camps : English/French or French/English depending on the composition of the groups,

Work: You will participate in agricultural work, planting and harvesting; maintenance of the buildings, the installation of folds for animals in the pinewood in front of the house, in the restoration of the access path to the farm and in the vegetables plantations. As the farm also runs as a biological farm, with hosting of visitors, you may (if you wish) participate in preparation of meals for visitors

Location:Located a few kilometres from the center of the village of Tret en Provence, the farm is in the middle of the vines, in front of the Sainte Victoire (a preserved mountain). Nearest towns: Marseille (30 minutes), Aix en provence (20 minutes)

Accommodation: In the main house, one room for the groupf of 4 international volunteers, space available being quite reduced. All facilities are available. Activ members of the association live in the house (4 persons permanantly). Shared meals for lunch; volunteers organise and take diner on their own. Nb : homestay type requires effort from everyone. No internet access in the hous, no TV. There is a library on Trets where books can be lent with internet acces (however, the farm is isolated from the village centre, at 4 km). Bring some games for evenings.

Age: The camps are open for young people between 20 and 30.

Note: there is no campleader; volunteers work under supervision of the active members of the association. Group is composed of 4 volunteers only. Volunteers should be interested in contributing to the development of the project; to work at different tasks according to the needs; be ready to share one room with other volunteers, respect the rules of home stay and common family type living.

JR07/308 to be confirmed Bedeilhac

Work: Supervised by the members of the local association, you will participate in the first phase of the project which consists in improving the access path that goes to the Tower. It is steep and needs to be made practicable for the advancement of the project. Furthermore you will clear the area and sort out the stones laying around the site which will be useful for the reconstruction work (2008 phase). Your work will consist in clearing out the bush and trees, leveling and preparing the path.

Location: Altitude : 600m. 150 inhabitants. The small village of Bedeilhac-et-Aynat is located in the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains, in the Saurat Valley which climbs up to the Port pass, a privileged passage point for the Tour de France cycling race. 5km from Tarascon-sur-Ariege, this quiet valley is surrounded by peaks and is connected to the Ariege Valley which leads to Spain. Nearby: the towns of Ax-les-Thermes (30km) and Foix (20km) and the principality of Andorra. Possible free time activities: hiking and cycling tours, the Bedeilhac Cave, many historical sites (castles, churches, etc...), and outdoors sports (canoeing, ...). Exchanges with the members of the local association who will warmly welcome you.

Accommodation: You will be accommodated in a community building in Bedeilhac, in dormitory style with kitchen and sanitary facilities. We cannot accommodate you if you arrive before the starting date of the workcamp.


JR07/316 to be confirmed Beaumont

Work: You will work under the supervision technician for the renovation of the outside walls and the modification of the entrances of the former school of Beaumont. Situated next to the townhall building, the school dates back from the beginning of the 20th century, and it requires a “freshing up work”. Various masonry work, and probably the fitting of new doors need to be done. NB: you might have to work on scaffoldings.

Location: The small village of Beaumont (120 inhabitants) is very typical of the Gers district. It is situated at about 8km from Condom; one of the most important towns of the area. This district is very famous for its gastronomy, its Armagnac liquor and its “laid-back” way of life. Nearby cities: Auch (50km), Toulouse (150km). Possible free time activities nearby: hiking and cycling tours, cultural visits (castles, churches, typical villages...), a very rich architectural heritage, museums, typical regional farm products making, vineyards.  Beaumont has also the particularity of hosting a castle which the property of Eve Ruggieri (quite famous journalist and writer in France), but also has a Roman-style church from the 10th century.

Accommodation: You will be hosted in the school building, in dormitory style, kitchen and sanitary facilities are available. We cannot accommodate you if you arrive before the starting date of the workcamp.


JR07/321 to be confirmed Bernac

Work: Under the supervision of a technician, you will participate in the maintenance and restoration of “capitelles” (kind of stone houses, typical housing of this region which used to shelter the local peasants) and “garennes” (stone structures which were used for rabbit raising). Your work will consist in clearing the bushes around the site and rebuilding some of the capitelles.

Location: Brenac is a very beautiful village of about 150 inhabitants, located in the Aude department, in the Cathar country, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. Its architecture and heritage are remarquable and very well preserved. Possible free time activities: wild and preserved nature to discover, between forests and Middle-Age heritage with very beautiful viewpoints. Nearby Brenac: a lake, Cathar castles, the medieval city of Carcassonne, Perpignan and the mediterranean coast. Sports activities: hiking, cycling, outdoors sports (canoeing, rafting)

JR07/211 17.06.2007 - 07.07.2007 Clerieux

Work: With a municipal employee, you will work at the restoration of a stone wall, removing of former plaster and recoating, painting of metal fences.

Location: At the heart of the “Drôme des Collines”, between Vercors and Coteaux Ardéchois, between Romans and Tain l’Hermitage and 20 km north of Valence, you will find Clérieux, a farmers’ village, that also had a rich industrial past with its grinding and its factory of fabrics. Its medieval past has left ramparts and a castle. Today, this dynamic town of 2,000 inhabitants, who participate in many associations’ activities enjoys a huge demographic growth. Possible free time activities (you can organize them, at your expenses, with the coordinator): excursion to Romans with a visit of the shoe museum and of the old town; discover the towns of St Donat sur l’Herbasse, Hauterives (the “Facteur Cheval” palace), Tain l’Hermitage (cooperative cellar, chocolate factory), of St Marcellin, of St Antoine l’Abbaye en Isère; sport (hikes, football, swimming), lake of Chambos; excursion to discover the Vercors; meeting with other workcamps.

JR07/107 24.06.2007 - 14.07.2007 Busset

FRENCH SPEAKING

Work: The workcamp will consist in restoring the traditional washing place of Busset. This municipality already hosted a workcamp in 1994. Work : cleaning of river the bed, to cutting two trees, to remove plaster and put new plaster with lime on the outside walls external of the construction, to clean the tiles (to remove moss with a brush), to restore some wooden steps to access to the washing place, to restore two low walls. Work on scaffolding for the walls. You will be led by a communal employee and an assistant.

Location: Busset is a rural village of 800 inhabitants, which is located at the south of the town of Vichy, close to St Yorre. This village owes its fame with its castle built in XIIIth century and which was the property of the branch (not reigning) of the descendants of Saint Louis. The municipality, located in altitude, offers a pleasant environment and a remarkable view on the Bourbon Mountain and the green countryside of the neighbourhoods of Vichy. Close towns : Vichy (12 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organise a visit during the workcamp. Animations possible on the spot: welcoming drink, football with the local club, bowls, meetings with the Feast Committee, visits of local heritage with Association " à côté de Busset », Feast on the 07/07 organized by the Firemen (meal + animation + fishing contest), meal offered by the municipality, meal in the families, international meal, visit of the medieval castle of the 13th century, tennis, hiking possible in the neighbourhood. Animations in the neighbourhoods: Visit factory of St Yorre mineral water, swimming pool in St Yorre, visite of Vichy, Exchange with the skate club of Vichy planned, visit the hippodrome, exchanges with the workcamp of Espinasse Vozelle.
TERMINAL: Vichy

Accommodation: : In a communal building, with facilities (shower and WC) on the spot. Possibility to have a kitchen at 50 m. Possibility to use showers at the municipal sport grounds. Lodging near the work place, and close to the village. One small grocery store in the village; other shops in St Yorre (at 5 kms).

JR07/120 24.06.2007 - 14.07.2007 Jaleyrac

FRENCH SPEAKING

Work: Opening the trail :  clearing and transportation of brushwood. Restoration of a bridge and three fountains :  cleaning off the moss;  rejointing. Help with the organisation of the village festival :  put the stands up and help with the food and refreshments. The volunteers will be guided by a local employee and supervised by elected officials. There will be two work groups. You might work on a small scaffolfing for the bridge.

Location: Jaleyrac, a town in the Cantal Departement situated in the region of Auvergne, is a rural town of 383 inhabitants.  It has a panoramic view on the Auvergne volcano chain and the Limousin  mountains. Jaleyrac, a picturesque flowery village hides under its soil the treasure of a XII century church.  In addition, there are lots of other assets to discover such as its fountains and bridges. Although Jaleyrac is situated in a deep funnel-shaped valley, the village is on a flatbed of 370 metres.  Nearby city: Mauriac - 5kms. Jeunesse and Reconstruction will organise one visit during the workcamp.  Possible free time activities:  participation at the village festival on July 1st.  Welcoming drink; initiation in fishing; international meal;  a visit of the village and especially of its Roman-Bysantine XII century church;  hiking and sightseeing the surrounding area;  evening gatherings at the local bar. Surrounding free time activities: excursions around the area such as walks along the Dordogne river; visit of Mauriac, excursions to Salers and Le Puy Mary. TERMINAL: Clermont-Ferrand / Aurillac

Accommodation: Dormitory in an old  school. Common showers and toilets near the school.  Kitchen in a room next to the Town Hall. The lodging is located in the village center and is situated at an altitude of 400 m. Short walk to get to the workcamp.  No shops in the village but there is a coffee bar.

Work: Sharing of the life and activities of the companions, organised around the collecting, fixing and selling of second-hand articles in the community shops. The volunteers will be associated to the daily tasks carried out all year round by the companions. The work will be shared in three stages:- first week: participation in the works of the community at Etoile (daily life, welcome, sale). -second week: prospection at Valence, in small groups. - third week: collect following the prospection. Attention : the last Saturday, you will participate in the selling of collected items (decision to grant the result of the selling to a solidarity action).

Location: Located at 10 km from south of Valence, in the Drôme, Etoile (4,500 inhabitants) is a town which overhangs the valley of the Rhône. Its village, at the heart of the enclosure of the 15th century, reveals an architectural heritage of quality: church, stone houses, chapel and castle. As for its country, it is characterized by very much diversified landscapes (edge of rivers – Rhône and Véore - , agricultural and fruit-bearing zones, hills and woods). The community is sheltered in a priory at 1.5 km from the village. Possible free time actvities (you can organize them, at your charges, with the coordinator): discover of Crest (visit of the tower, abseiling...), and of various sites of the Drôme valley such as Die (old town, and cooperative cellar), Saillans (magnagnery), Aouste (oil mill)...; visit of the town of Valence, Montélimar (museum of the miniature and manufacture of nougat), Romans (the shoe museum); excursion to discover the Vercors; sports, rides, hikes, swimming, canoe (Drôme); the lake festival at Etoile; meeting with other workcamps. Organisation of days with topic, in order to develop exchanges.

JR07/207 24.06.2007 - 14.07.2007 Bourg Argental

Work: The municipality has a pedestrian trail that needs cleaning. You will do this clearing and cleaning work, and repair public furniture along the train in order to make it safe for use by the public.

Location: In the south east of France, and south of the Loire department close to Ardeche department, discover a town in the middle of the Natural reserve of Pilat, at the junction of three rivers. The village is attached to the district of Saint-Etienne, and has developed its own specificity between the towns of Annonay (Ardeche) and Saint-Etienne (Loire). It offers a very pleasant environment to live in, with all facilities (transport, shops, services) and allow everyone to live according to their wishes. For those fond of history, Borough-Argental owns a large number of vestiges which testify of the richness of its past. Many visits of villages and towns rich of art and culture are possible: Annonay, Lyon, St Etienne, St Julien Molin Molin Molette... The Natural reserve of Pilat offers many possibilities of discovery.

JR07/100 01.07.2007 - 21.07.2007 Lavaudieu

Work: Installation of stone steps to create a way to the river (during 2 weeks) : levelling of the ground to put the steps. On the 3rd week, you will restore the woodworks (framing of windows, doors, of a balcony out of wood) in the gardens of the Abbey: cleaning of the woodworks and varnishing (during 1 week). Work can be physical for step creation. You will be led by a specialist.

Location:  This charming village developed around the abbey bénédictines, built by the founder of the Abbey of la Chaise Dieu, Robert de TURLANDE. Often chosen by fims makers, Lavaudieu hosted  the team of the movie "les Rivières Pourpres" in spring 2003. The benedictine abbey established in the Middle Ages turned the valley of Senouire into "the valley of God" and gave its name to the village. Nested in a peaceful woody small valley, overhanging Sénouire, Lavaudieu (9 kms east of Brioude) attracts many tourists and people fond of historical inheritance, amongst other things thanks to its classification as one of the most beautiful villages in France". / Population: 230 inhabitants/Close towns:  Brioude (10 kms), Issoire (43 kms), Puy en Velay (54 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize one visit during the workcamp. Possible animations on the spot: welcoming dring by the municipality, Exchanges with association the Friends of Lavaudieu, Visits of the village, bénédictine abbey with the Friends of Lavaudieu, Canoe kayak with a local association, climbing, discovery of everyday life in a rural village at the beginning of the XIX° century illustrated and guide in the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of Haute-Loire, international meal, river Sénouire, hiking. Possible animations in the neighbourhoods: Visit of Brioude, swimming in Langeac (discovery of the gorges of Allier), renting of moutain bikes in Brioude, swimming pool in  Brioude, Visit the castle of Paulhac and Lespinasse.

Accommodation: In the old school, in the village centre, close to the working place. Altitude: 550 m; no shops in the village, shops in Brioude (10 kms).


JR07/108 01.07.2007 - 21.07.2007 Espinasse - Vozelle

Work: Restoration of the old courtyard of the school: removing of the  plastic constructions to open the courtyard as it was before, restoration of the outside and inside walls (made of bricks and cobs). In the schoolyard: to sandpaper and repaint game modules for children. Installation of underground of young space: to install storage boxes out of wood. You will be framed by the communal employees. You will be divided into 2 or 3 groups. It is possible that you work on scaffolding for the courtyard.

Location: Espinasse-Vozelle is a rural village of 700 inhabitants in the heart of Limagne Bourbonnaise region, which is part of the Community of agglomerations of Vichy. The village is located in the western end of the territory of the Community. Espinasse-Vozelle has a primary school which host each year approximately 70 pupils. The municipality wishes to preserve this school and the life that it brings to the village. The municipality is caring for the children but also of the teenagers of the village. The project of a youth centre will be carried out. As of this summer, this centre will be open, and will allow to establish links between among teenagers. Close towns : Vichy (10 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organise a visit during the workcamp. Animations possible on the spot: welcoming drink, Exchanges and meetings with the young people by the means of the youth centre, Participation in the festival of 14th July, meetings with the club of Edlerly people, excursion in the neighbourhoods with the inhabitants, football with the local club, international meal, visit of the borough and its church. Animations possible in the neighbourhoods: Visit of Vichy, sporting in the sport Center in Vichy, Visit Castle of Billy, meeting with volunteer of Busset workcamp.

Work: You will be guided by a professional sculptor who used to restore historical monuments. Delighted to share his know-how, he already guided several workcamps. Volunteers must be committed to the project. Students and people fond of built heritage are expected. Restoration of a fountain: building dry-stone walls in order to delimit the fountain, building of steps made out of stones in order to go down the fountain. Restoration of the roof of a washing place at Les Coissards: restore the wooden frame and the roof, change the tiles. You will possibly work on scaffolding.

Location: The small village of Montmorin is located in the Puy de Dôme region, next to Billom, east of Clermont Ferrand. It belongs to the St Dier-billom grouping of towns. Montmorin is a small rural village divided into 40 hamlets, and located in the middle of a valley. Nature lovers are expected. Population: 525 inhabitants, Altitude: 630 m. Location: Located between Valence and Montélimar, Livron is a necessary passage on road N7, for the holiday makers of the Mediterranean region. its landscapes is made of valleys, with the junction of the Drôme and the Rhône rivers, Livron offers the possibility to do various hikes on river banks. The old village located on the “hillock”, reveals a panorama on the Ardèche and the Drôme valley. Work: The restoration work that will be started has been planned for years by the municipality. In 2006, clearing and cleaning work was done by a group of international volunteers. This year, you will work on the restoration of a building (small masonry) with the help of a specialist who has led volunteers’ work for years.

Location: Located at 10 km south of Valence, in the Drôme, Etoile (4 500 inhabitants) is a town which overhangs the Rhône valley. Its village, at the heart of an enclosure of the 15th century, reveals an architectural heritage of quality: church, apparent-stone houses, chapel and castle. As for its countryside, it is characterized by very diversified landscapes (edge of river – Rhône and Véore -, agricultural and fruit-bearing zones, hills and woods). Work: Under supersivion of the volunteers of the Association Limonest Patrimoine - for the work of the “Batterie des Carrieres” you will have: to restore the stones of the enclosing wall, to clear an opening on the shooting platform and to rebuild a low wall and a staircase. For the second project, volunteers will work under supervision of the “Association de Sauvegarde des Lavoirs des Monts d’Or” (associaton that preserves traditional washing places). Work will consist in restoring one of these traditional washing places : restoration of the roof and masonry work to restore the water ways.

Work: The workcamp will be divided in two major moments: The first week : under the supervision of a specialist, you will participate in public utility work in the village (not yet determined, manual work). During week 2 and 3: in collaboration with the organization and the volunteers of this festival, you will take part in the preparation, the development and the closing of the jazz festival: handling and the assembling of the equipment, the preparation of the stages , selling of entrance tickets, drinks, and finally the cleaning and disassembling of the stages... Attention: a certain flexibility in the work is required according to the needs of the festival.

Location: Altitude: 340m. Located at 20km North-East from the town of Figeac in the dry plains of the Causses region, Assier is a charming little village with a rich historical past. There is a castle from the Renaissance period and also a fortified church. In spite of this small size (550 inhabitants), the village is very dynamic and has received more than 1500 spectators during the festival in 2006. Work: You will share the life and activities of the Emmaus community of La Villedieu du Temple, where 40 companions are living permanently, organised around the collection and sale of second-hand articles. The volunteers will work alongside the companions: collection of objects donated to the community (furniture, clothes, household equipment), sorting out, repairing and recycling of those, public sale in the community shops. Above all, open-mindedness beyond discriminations and intercultural exchange will be central in the work.

Location: La Villedieu du Temple is at 10 km west of the town of Montauban, and 45 minutes drive from the city of Toulouse, in a rural region of cereal production. The community is located 3km from the village of La Villedieu du Temple; it is a small hamlet in itself. Your leisure activities and animations will be organized with the residents: theme parties, visits of Montauban and Moissac,canoeing and a lot of different sports.

Location: Altitude 332m, 3200 inhabitants. Varilhes is a rural village on the river Ariege. It offers charming country-side landscapes, in an agricultural and cattle-raising region, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, in the heart of the Cathar country. Nearby cities: Pamiers(10km), Foix(10km), Toulouse(80km). Possible free time activities : the environment allows amazing hikes and cycling tours to discover the region; sites to visit in the surroundings: Mirepoix, Foix, medieval city of Carcassonne, Cathar castles...The municipality grants a free access to the swimming pool to the volunteers.

Work: Under the supervision the municipal staff, you will participate in the valorisation and maintenance of the traditional towpath located on the banks of the river Lot. This towpath was formerly made for horses to pull the barges (boats) that used to carry the goods all along the Lot valley. The work will consist in clearing the bush and levelling the towpath in order to give it a better look and enhance the site.

Location: Caillac is a small village located on the banks of the river Lot, in the heart of the vineyards of Cahors; it offers a quiet and pleasant environment. Its church of the 10th century is a testimony of the rich cultural heritage of this region. You will find in the village: a restaurant, a small grocery store, a post office. Possible free time activities: canoeing, swimming in the river, local cultural festivals, visit of castles and of vineyards, many possibilities of hiking, visit of the town of Cahors (20km).

Work: You will carry out the first project on this oven. At the beginning of your stay, you will carry out excavations and research on the spot in order to recover old materials (stones of the vault, other parts of the walls). Then, you will rebuild the walls on the whole of the oven (i.e. approximately 0,5 m high) and will rebuild the vault and the chimney. You will be led by an employee of our association, mason. This work is rather physical and technical but very interesting from the point of view of heritage. There will be some work on a small scaffolding.

Location:The Community of communes of the Country of Saugues is a rural territory located between the gorges of Allier and the Margeride Monts. It is a vast territory of mountains, located between 600 and 1500 meters, which is composed of 16 municipalities. The Country of Saugues is also the place where was born the legend of the beast of Gévaudan, which attracts each year curious tourists. This territory located on the way to St Jacques of Compostele is also marked by religion, which forms integral part of the life of people of the country. St Préjet d’Allier is characterized by its situation. This small rural village, located in a deep small valley where two rivers (Ance and Virlange) run, offers a pleasant environment for those in love of fishing. Two dams were built in the village of St Préjet d’Allier, which feed the hydroelectric factory of Monistrol d’Allier. Work: You will clear an invasive plant, from the banks of the Dordogne river : clearing, cut the plants. You will be guided by the camp leader of Jeunesse et Reconstruction and supervised by local employees. Location: Close to the Puy de Sancy mountain, at the heart of the regional Park Volcans d’Auvergne (park of volcanoes), in the valley of la Haute Dordogne, the Mont-Dore station has three main vocations: tourism, water cures, winter sports. Work: In association with the association, you will participate in the preparation, the organisation and the closing of the music festival, during which many bands will be on the stage and where many debates and cultural and gastronomical events will take place. Your tasks will include the handling and the assembling of the equipment, the preparation of the stages, the events linked with the theme of the festival (debates, exhibitions, etc.) and finally the cleaning and disassembling of the stages. Location: About 20km from the town of Lannemezan, near Tarbes. Altitude: 340m, 350 inhabitants. The rural village of Monléon-Magnoac is situated in the midst of a hilly landscape with amazing viewpoints over the Pyrenees Montains. This location offers the possibility for many excursions in the mountains: the “Pic du Midi” (2877m of altitude), the Gavarnie cirque, the Esparros cave, etc... Possible free time activities: hiking around the village, bathing,... However, the main entertainment activity during your stay will be the festival in itself!

Work: Restoration of a building, former pigsty: removing of plaster of the external walls, recoating with lime. Construction of a dry stone wall: preparation of the trench, construction of a 50 height cm low wall approximately on 4, 5 m broad. Cleaning around the Mill of Runs up (to remove the vegetation, Coupe shrubs around the bridge, interior Nettoyage of Recoule). Help with the organization of the festival of Domaize: installation (stands, tents, electricity, security fences, and information panels), reception of the public, ticketing, cleaning after the festival. You will be led by an assistant for the work on the walls and volunteers of association Do’mais’en’corps for the festival. Work on the dry stone wall is technical and interesting. Location: Brout Vernet is located 20 km north-west of Vichy. It has been the site of Rock Preserv’ festival organized by the Galib’art association for more than 10 years. Those concerts are the opportunity for local and national groups to become more popular. Location: Town of history and tradition, Langeac was one of the thirteen good towns of Auvergne to be represented with the State-Generals of the Province of Auvergne. That Langeac became in 1786 the Marquisat of the Lafayette General is an event of local history at the time very important. You will be supervised by a town employee and a town volunteer helping with the organisation of the exhibitions.

Location: Nearby city : Mauriac (15kms). Arches, located in the high valley of Dordogne, is a rural village of 175 inhabitants. A section of the territory of the municipality dominates the Dordogne River, which represents a natural and an administrative limit in one, because it separates the Cantal from the Corrèze departments but also the regions of AUVERGNE and LIMOUSIN. Work: Under the supervision of municipal employees, you will work in several teams : continuation of the laying out of terraces, clearing of the vegetation and removing of the surplus of ground; building of a dry stone wall: selection and laying of the stones; landscaping: levelling of the ground to prepare plantations. Another teal will work on the maintenance of green areas (village outskirts, botanical village, ...).

Location: Located in southern Drôme, in the country of Grignan, at the edge of the Rhone valley, the village of Roussas is located around a rock piton. It is one of the nine botanical villages of la Drôme. A superb botanical circuit goes through thus the village and enables visitors to discover plantations of new roses and Mediterranean plants. Work: With a communal employee and a member of the municipal board, you will take part in the restoration of the house of the Chaplain: clearing of undergrowth covering the ruins, consolidation of the walls, rebuilding of crumbled parts. Another of your duty will be to revalorize the botanical path which passes in front of the house of the chaplain: cleaning the path in order to valorise its , opening of a section along the river in order to avoid that visitors use the main road, clearing of undergrowth and cleaning of the neighbouring path.

Location: A the limit of the Forez valley, crossed by the Loire and close to the Forez Mounts, which form a geographical border between Auvergne and the Rhone-Alps area, Ecotay Olme is located at a few kilometres from Montbrison, at 30 km from St Etienne. In the heart of a country of Art and History, its heritage is rich, in terms of history and natural sites. Many possible excursions allow to discover the area, hiking, cycling. Tow weeks to restore and improve equipments used by donkeys: construction of a wooden shelter, maintenance of hiking material, laying out of a workshop, renovations of stalls... All the work will be done according to the principal of eco-construction. There will also be plenty of time to go our for hikes and camping with the donkeys, to participate in artistic workshops, to discover new activities, to meet local youth, to discover the region

Work: You will carry out the first project on this oven. At the beginning of your stay, you will carry out excavations and research on the spot in order to recover old materials (stones of the vault, other parts of the walls). Then, you will rebuild the walls on the whole of the oven (i.e. approximately 0,5 m high) and will rebuild the vault and the chimney. You will be led by an employee of our association, mason. This work is rather physical and technical but very interesting from the point of view of heritage. There will be some work on a small scaffolding.

Location: The Community of communes of the Country of Saugues is a rural territory located between the gorges of Allier and the Margeride Monts. It is a vast territory of mountains, located between 600 and 1500 meters, which is composed of 16 municipalities. The Country of Saugues is also the place where was born the legend of the beast of Gévaudan, which attracts each year curious tourists. This territory located on the way to St Jacques of Compostele is also marked by religion, which forms integral part of the life of people of the country. St Préjet d’Allier is characterized by its situation. This small rural village, located in a deep small valley where two rivers (Ance and Virlange) run, offers a pleasant environment for those in love of fishing. Two dams were built in the village of St Préjet d’Allier, which feed the hydroelectric factory of Monistrol d’Allier. Population: 200 inhabitants; Close towns : Saugues (13 kms), Puy in Velay (35 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize one visit during the workcamp. Work: Rehabilitation of the path leading to the statue of Natzy: removing of the small slipping stones, levelling of the ground, building of small low walls, to install a dozen drains for the water run-off with wood logs, clearing of undergrowth. You will be led by a communal employee of la Bourboule, in charge for the parks.

Location: Sancy Artense Community of Communes, of which La Tour d’Auvergne forms part, is a territory of medium mountains offering a richness of landscape where water is omnipresent. Located at the extreme south-west of the department of Puy-de-Dome, limited by departments of Corrèze and Cantal, this territory is composed of distinct geographical entities: mountains of Sancy, the valley of the Dordogne, plateau of Artense. With a preserved environment, it became a favourite place of destination for tourist location and new inhabitants. Population: 800 inhabitants: close towns: Clermont Ferrand (68 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize one visit during the workcamp. Work: Restoration of a wasing place: you will rehabilitate the stone paving around the washing place. Restoration of walls (near the castle or in the center). Creation of a footpath. You might be divided in 2 or 3 groups. You will be guided by a mason retired.

Location: Small village of 250 inhabitants, at 6 km south of Riom es Montagne. On a pick rock which overlooks the village of Apchon, there are still some majestic ruins of a castle which was one of the most significant of la Haute-Auvergne. Jeunesse et Reconstruction organizes one visit during the workcamp. Possible free time activities: welcoming drink, football, visit of a farm, participation to the cows draft, Bal organised by the local population, meetings or meals with the inhabitants, international meal, Biking, Visit of the castle. Work: Guided by a local employee, you will participate in several kinds of works: painting work at the local school and other municipal buildings; clearing work and maintenance of green areas will allow you to participate in the enhancement of the village.

Location: Located between the towns of Valence and Grenoble, at the entrance of the Vercors mountains, St Nazaire en Royans (500 inhabitants) is at the crossing of the wooded hills of the Préalpes and of the rich valleys of Drôme. The village,formerly fortified, has many narrow lanes and old medieval buildings, and we appreciate to stroll there. But St Nazaire is above all famous for its aqueduct spanning river Bourne with its red rocks and the village. Towns nearby: Romans (20 km), Valence (30 km). Possible free time activities (you can organize them, at your charge, with the coordinator)- some visits will be organized by the association. Sport activities such as mountain bike, hikes or swimming. Visit of places such as the Pont en Royans, La chapelle en Vercors, the Forest of Lente, the road of Combe-Laval or the Grands-Goulets. Work: With a municipal employee, experienced with leading work of volunteers, you will restore a stone wall : removing of old plaster and restoring and rebuilding of damaged parts. Cleaning and painting of an iron fence.

Location: Located at the entrance of the Vercors mountains, St Jean en Royans (3 000 inhabitants) is at the crossing of the mountain and the valley. This town has since a long time been the commercial and industrial capital of the area. Animated in summer, St Jean en Royans is the starting point of many picturesque excursions. Towns nearby: Romans (27 km), Valence (37 km). Possible free time activities (you can organize them, at your charge, with the coordinator)- some visits will be organized by the association. FRENCH SPEAKING

Work: With a communal employee, you will have to clear undergrowth, clean the terraces. Restoration work of the dry stone walls will be carried out according to traditional techniques of construction of the terraces. There will also be some work to make access to the site easier.

Location: Located in the north of Ardeche, between vineyards of the Rhone, Arras remains a very rural village. it is possible to practise the trout fishing in the river which crosses the village,. The deep gorges of Ozon, the banks of the Rhone and the two main roads which lead to the close Ardèche Plateau, are as many places privileged for hiking. Arras sur Rhone is represents one of the typical villages of the Rhone right bank : it is crossed by main road 86 at the foot of mountains, and its territory is spread in the neighbouring hills which one can reach by typical mountain roads. Many associations of the village allow the practice of several activities: tennis, folk dance, pétanque, table tennis... You will be able to visit many picturesque villages by travelling by the small train toristic of the valley of Doux , visite of Valence, Tain l’Hermitage, Tournon, Romans.

Work: Under supervision of volunteers of the association, you will take part in the maintenance of the channel: clearing of undergrowth and dead wood.

Location: Half way between Valence south and Lyon north, Auberives is a municipality of Isere, department. Its situation in the heart of the Rhone-Alps area is an important asset. The climate is good enough there to allow the culture of many varieties of fruit and vegetables. The possibilities of hiking are infinite: the natural reserve of Pilat and the Rhone is a quite accessible, Vercors and the Alps are close. Possible visits:  Roussillon (potteries, castle rnaissance, church,), of Malleval (medieval village), of Vienne and St Romain en Gal, of la Côte St Andre (palace of the chocolate, museum H. Berlioz), of St Désirat, of the museum of the Canson paper mill and Montgolfier in Davézieux, of the natural reserve of the island of the Platière in Salons.

Work: Supervised by specialists who will sensitise you on the issues of river preservation, you will participate in the cleaning of river “Amadou”: clearing, pruning and cutting of trees, laying out of the banks. Important: please bring suitable and strong shoes, the ground can be slippery.

Location: Around 25 km south-east from Toulouse. Altitude: 170 m, 2000 inhabitants: Ayguesvives, your hosting village, offers the pleasantness of a coutryside landscape, in a region of large cereal fields. Although it is close to the urban cluster of Toulouse, the village keeps a very typical look. Possible free time activities: hiking, visits of typical villages, the city of Toulouse and its suroundings, cultural activities (cinema, concerts, theatre, etc).

Work: Under the supervision of a specialist (retired, former construction worker), you will work on the renovation and reconstruction of some portions of the former fortification walls and other walls within the village. Furthermore, you will work on the "7 Churches Tour"; hiking path in order to clear it and mark it with new beacons.

Location: At an altitude of 130 m, 30 km west of the town of Cahors, Puy l’Evêque is a village of 2300 inhabitants. It is a former medieval town, located in the heart of Cahors vineyards; it is built on a hill overlooking the river Lot. It has a very rich heritage of stone built houses and walls. Possible free time activities: public swimming pool, canoe-kayak, visits to surrounding castles, hikes. Nearest town is Cahors, rich in history.

Work: Supervised by an experienced mason, you will continue the presevation of the ruins of the castle of the Earls of Comminges: clearing of the bush, masonry, building of small stone walls. The site hosts several hundreds of visitors in the summer months.

Location: Bramevaque is a small rural village of 30 inhabitants, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains marking the border with Spain. The site offers beautiful landscapes and view points. The Barousse valley is one of the most remarquable valley of the Pyrenees; it is also one of the passage points of the Tour de France cycling race. Possible free time activities : hiking, swimming, visit of natural caves, the famous abbey of St Bertrand, the watersports resort of Antignac, the Barousse museum. Work: You will be guided by a local employee or/and a mason retired. Restoration of the washing place at Ste Marie des Chazes and its surroundings: masonry work, cleaning, rejointing of the surrounding stone wall, rehabilitation of the basaltic stone paving, rehabilitation of the accesses to the washing place (take off the concrete, installation of a stone paving), restoration of a fountain. You might work 3 whole days per week.

Location: Located in the south of Auvergne, in an essentially rural region, the town of Siaugues-Ste-Marie is in an area which has an historical and cultural heritage, within protected natural landscapes. Work: Alongside a small stream the "Feloin", many trees of small size have to be cut. Clearing of the vegetation which invades the walls bordering the brook: clearing of undergrowth and cleaning. Release of the trees to widen the path which goes up to the field of Catonnière. Cleaning of the small bridge and the stone staircases near the brook; Work will be led by a communal employee you will have to handle the tools of the clearing of undergrowth (saws and shears) and for most courageous why not learning how to use a treedozer or a slicer?

Location: Half way between Lyon and St Etienne, located on a quite exposed slope above the Valley of Gier, Saint-Martin-la-Plaine offers a remarkable panorama on the Pilat Mountain, and in clear weather on the alpine range. Main tourist curiosity is the zoological Space, which receives 120 000 visitors each year. Many hiking trails are available, as well as a thematic routes that allow to discover its richeness. Location: At 600 m of altitude in the department of the Loire, at the limit of the department of Ardeche, St Julien Molin Molette lies in the heart of the Regional Natural reserve of Pilat. Work: Your work will consist in re-building supporting walls made of stones around the “Notre-Dame de Livron” sanctuary. The work will be supervised by members of the local association, whose aim is to preserve this sanctuary. The work will be physical and might require that you work upon scaffoldings.

Location: Caylus, a stone-built village located within a natural cirque, was a highly developped fortress in the Middle Ages. Remains of this rich history are still numerous in the village: several washhouses, a castle, churches, houses in the traditional architectural style, water mills ... thus a lot to be discovered on the spot and in the neighbourhood. To be seen in the surroundings: wild and preserved natural sites to discover, between rivers and forests with very beautiful viewpoints. You will have the occasion to meet the inhabitants and the volunteers of the local association who will tell you about the history of their village and who will warmly welcome you.

Work: In association with ECP, you will participate in the preparation, the organisation and the closing of the music festival "Riff Mania", which brings young people to express themselves in various ways : performance, painting, public discussions. Your tasks will include the handling and the assembling of the equipment, the preparation of the stages, the animations linked with the theme of the festival (workshops, exhibitions, etc.) and finally the preparation of meals, the cleaning and disassembling of the stages. Attention: a certain flexibility in the work is required according to the needs of the festival.

Location: Located at about 2 hours by car from Toulouse, Castelnau-Riviere-Basse is a small village of 800 inhabitants, at the limit between the Gers and the Hautes-Pyrenees departments. The region offers an amazingly wide range of landscapes, and it is famous for its vineyards. Possible free time activities : hiking, swimming, visits of typical villages, visits of castles, exchanges with the local population, the organisers of the festival, the members of ECP and the visitors.

You will be guided by a technical leader of our association (mason). You will restore bridges and low walls along the Angaud river: removing of moss and replastering, installing stones. Technical Work.

Location: Billom is a small town of 5000 inhabitants in the regional park of Livradois Forez, 20 min from Clermont-Ferrand and Thiers. Originally druidic center, its intense development enabled this gallic village to become one of the first important town of Auvergne, in the XII°century and to build its fortifications. The medieval area and old documents are not enough to describe this welcoming town. Population: 4300/ City nearby : Clermont Ferrand (25 kms). Jeunesse et Reconstruction will organize one visit during the workcamp. JR07/304 26.08.2007 - 15.09.2007 Laroque D'Olmes

Work: You will participate in the renovation of the MJC (Public House of Youth and Culture) of the village. In partnership with the municipality and the MJC, this project will be the occasion to work together with the local youth (12 to 18 year-olds), in the objective of an intercultural cooperation. The work will consist in painting and doing small masonry and electricity work. You might also participate in other community work in the village if necessary. You will be supervised by the MJC workers and the municipal staff.

Location: Laroque d’Olmes is a charming and lively little village of the Ariege department, enjoying a rich and preserved natural environment; it is also the stronghold of the local textile industry. It is situated in the heart of the Cathar country and at the foot of the Olmes Mountains (Pyrenees), in a calm and rural area. Possible free time activities: hiking or cycling tours, visits of Cathar castles, sport activities, visit of the textile plant of the village, swimming at the lake, visits of the cities of Foix, Toulouse or the medieval city of Carcassonne.  Some activities will be organised jointly with the local teenagers of the MJC.

JR07/306 26.08.2007 - 15.09.2007 Camon

Work: Under the supervision of an experienced technician and of the volunteers of a local association which aims at preserving the local heritage, you will be initiated to the stonework techniques, and you will participate in the restoration of stonewalls and of “capitelles” (kind of stone houses, typical of this region). Your work could also consist in clearing the bushes around the site. Remark : you will have to walk 15 to 30 minutes daily from your lodging place to the work area.

Location: Camon is a very beautiful village of about 150 inhabitants, located in the Ariège department, in the Cathar country, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France: its architecture and heritage are remarquable and very well preserved. Possible free time activities: wild and preserved nature to discover, between forests and Middle-Age heritage with very beautiful viewpoints. Nearby Camon: a lake, Cathar castles, the medieval city of Carcassonne, the cities of Foix and Toulouse. You will have the occasion to meet the inhabitants and local volunteers of the association which will make you discover the history of their village and who will warmly welcome you.

Work: Under the supervision of the municipal staff, your work will consist in continuing the work that was started last year in its second phase: painting the townhall, located in the village centre, in order to give it a fresh look. This time you will paint the inside of the building.

Location: La Bastide is a charming little village of the Ariege department, enjoying a rich and preserved natural environment; it is also the home of traditional craftsmanship: the making of natural horn-made combs. It is situated in the heart of the Cathar country and at the foot of the Olmes Mountains (Pyrenees), in a calm and rural area. Possible free time activities: hiking or cycling tours, visits of Cathar castles, sport activities, visit of the comb factory of the village, swimming at the lake, visits of the cities of Foix, Toulouse or the medieval city of Carcassonne.
The inhabitants and the municipality team will definitely give you a warm welcome.
