CVG01 14.06.2007 - 29.06.2007 Kalarrites

Work: Volunteers will work on the restoration of the village's cathedral, St. Nicolas, mainly, by removing the plaster from the stone made walls of the exterior. The procedure of restoration in one of the most picturesque villages, with buildings made with the famous technique of the stone artisans of Epirus area,   is a wonderful experience that recompenses volunteers, as they learn a method that tends to cease being used by artisans, in surroundings of a unique beauty. Last summer, another group of volunteers had started working on the cathedral, so, this year the group is going to finish this task. If they finish before the end of the program, the group is going to use the same technique on the faucets of the central circus of the village.

Extra Activities: In their free time, participants will have the opportunity to get in touch with the everyday life of the village; they may attend events organised by the authorities during the period of their stay (concerts, performances, etc.) and communicate with locals and tourists. Volunteers will discuss their free time activities with their camp leaders; together they are going to organise excursions and visits around the area.

Location: Kalarrites is a traditional, picturesque village of Epirus, with stone made buildings. Situated 55 km from the city of Ioannina, on the mountain chain of Pindos, Kalarrites is a characteristic and famous village of the Tzoumerka side of Pindos, on 920m, where time seems to have stopped: once someone enters the village, meets beautiful faucets with crystal waters running, stone made paved with slabs, small stone made bridges and rivers, traditional buildings, wonderful, hospitable people. All the above create a fairytale scenery. Volunteers will have the chance to meet the local inhabitants and see for themselves their friendliness and hospitality.
TERMINAL:
Athens international airport "El. Venizelos", Thessaloniki international airport "Macedonia". IOANNINA national airport.

Accommodation: In a house (Showers, toilets and kitchen facilities provided). Volunteers have to bring their sleeping bag and a mat. One or two volunteers will cook and clean everyday in shifts.

Fee: 160,00 Euro

The Ministry, within the next years, is going to set up forest villages in all forest clusters of Greece and thus create centres of development for mountainous areas of our country, places of recreation and environmental training, resorts from the modern life stress, through a direct contact with nature. Kedros is only 2 km far from Katarraktis (Waterfall) village, named after the two beautiful waterfalls just above it; the perfect place to start exploring some of the most beautiful mountains of Greece.

Location:  Mount Athos is situated in the entire third, eastern and most beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki (Macedonia, northern Greece), called the peninsula of Athos. It is the only place in Greece completely dedicated to prayer and worship of God. For this reason, it is called the Holy Mount. It covers an area of about 350 square kilometres and of an extraordinary natural beauty. The Holy Mount is a self- governed part of the Greek state, subject to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its political aspect and to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinopole as regards its religious aspect. It has been divided into twenty self- governed territories. Each territory consists of a cardinal monastery and some other monastic establishments that surround it (cloisters, cells, cottages, seats, hermitages). All the monasteries are communes (of a convent nature) and that means that liturgy, prayer, housing, nourishing and work are shared among the monks. The Cell of St George is located to the north of Karyes, the capital of the Holy Mount, towards the famous Vatopedi Monastery. Monk Isaac is the only one monk living there (the Cell was abandoned for twenty years), who has dedicated his life in the renovation of the Cell since 2003. In 2007, as in 2006, he is going to continue this mission with the important help of volunteers. Athens international airport "El. Venizelos", Thessaloniki international airport "Macedonia".
