WORKCAMPS IN TANZANIA
In 2007 OIKOS organises in collaboration with IYS (Intercultural Youth Service), a local non-profit organisation, several workcamps in Tanzania.
The fee of participation (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) is 80,00 Euro and has to be paid when applying for a camp.
The camp-fee (including board and lodging) is 220,00 US-Dollar (the charge of 2 following workcamps will be 400,00 US-Dollar) and has to be paid to the camp-coordinator on arrival in Tanzania.

WORKCAMP PROGRAM: IYS work camps are a unique form of Community Service, organized in cooperation either with local authorities or local organizations. The projects are designed to respond to the needs of the community, and offer a non-formal educational experience for people who are eager to learn. Throughout two to three weeks of fun but challenging work, discussions, excursions and international exchanges, this program helps foster tolerance and understanding, break down barriers, reduce prejudice and fight stereotyping. Meetings with the local population are an important part of the projects.
Work camps offer volunteers an opportunity to work on a community related project, including construction and renovation of community facilities, conservation of the natural environment and cultural heritage, and organizing holiday activities for disadvantaged groups. Where possible, volunteers live together for the duration of the work camp. Where this is not possible, they live with families. IYS offers international work camps, which are open to Tanzanians and participants from around the world.
ORIENTATION: Orientation will occupy one or two days of the beginning of the program.
Activities include registration, introductions, preparation and sight seeing.COMMUNITY SERVICES :For eight days volunteers will be involved in a community development project. Projects can involve tree-planting, classrooms construction, community outreach, etc. Work time will be approximately five hours per day, but it may vary depending on specific project schedules.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES: Participants will jointly organize educational acuities on the topics of interest. This may vary from group dynamics, Political, economic etc. As part of educational activities tours will be organized to visit different Institution and social groups in the community. Visits to historical, natural and cultural attractions of the region will be also part of educational activity.
CULTURAL NIGHTS: In order to promote cultural exchange, groups of volunteers from the same country will introduce there culture through dances, songs, games, story telling, traditional costumes, etc. This activity provides everybody with an opportunity to learn more about the culture of their fellow volunteers and of the surrounding community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION: No special skills are required. Specific knowledge and technical know how in the field that your project focuses on can be useful but not necessary. However, volunteers should: Be motivated. Respect the rules of IYS and of the hosting project. Make an effort to understand and respect the culture of both the host and the other participants. Be flexible, proactive and healthy
Local volunteers should be at least 15 years old, while foreign volunteers should be over 18. There is no maximum age restriction. IYS aims to create a balance of participants in terms of gender, ethnicity and nationality in order to achieve a balanced diversity.
