WORKCAMPS IN PERU
In 2008 OIKOS organises in collaboration with Vive Mexico, a local non-profit organisation, several workcamps in Peru.
The fee of participation (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) is 100,00 Euro and has to be paid when applying for a camp.
The camp-fee (including board and lodging) is 210,00 Euro and has to be paid to the camp-coordinator on arrival in Peru.

GENERAL CONDITIONS ABOUT THE WORKCAMPS
Volunteers must be 18 or older.
English is the official language inside the groups but due to the nature of some of the projects a basic knowledge of Spanish could be required.
It would be very good if volunteers could come with a preparation for projects in Latin American countries in order to reduce the cultural shock, but also all volunteers will have an orientation session the first day of each workcamp.
We ask the volunteers to stay during the whole duration of the project.
The departure day for the group will be the last day of the workcamp.
Volunteers will need to bring sleeping bag and air mattress.
Volunteers are working 5 days a week between 4 and 6 hours a day. Generally on the week ends the group will visit different part of the region where they will be.
In all the projects the volunteers will be self managed with the help of the leaders. They will cook their food, clean their lodging and decide together what kind of food to buy, and how to use their budget for the leisure time.
Volunteers have to be open minded and flexible about Peruvian culture and food.
SPANISH COURSE
OPTIONAL ACTIVITY FOR ALL THE VOLUNTEERS
Very important information for all the volunteers accepted in the Peru Sonqoikipy Projects
Sonqoykipi besides the workcamp it self, gives the opportunity to take part in an Intensive Course of Spanish for all the volunteers interested. This activity is organized 7 days before the starting date of each camp. The volunteers MUST GO to the city of Ayacucho to take part in it.
After participating the volunteer must travel to his/her project meeting point.
The cost for the Spanish language course is: 150,00 Euro
This cost includes:
Hosting for 7 days and 6 nights in one house of the city with all facilities at your disposal.
Materials needed for the course (books of theory, books for exercises, etc.)
Intensive Spanish classes given by a professional Spanish teacher in the city of Ayacucho.
This cost is inexpensive compared with the traditional language courses in the private schools of Spanish in Peru and the people giving the course are professional teachers of Spanish. The classes are 3 hours a day during 5 days and the participants have a lot of home work to do.There will be a free day generally on Sunday, to give the chance to the participants to visit the nearby towns and interesting places and to know better each other. The volunteers have to indicate in the confirmation slip if they will participate in these activities and in which dates.

Currently, there are approximately 48 boys in the orphanage with ages ranging from 5-17 years old. You will be in contact with half of the group at a time as half are at school in the morning and the other half of the group goes to school in the afternoon. These boys have come to URPI for a variety of reasons concerning their familial situations; this could include reasons such as death of parents, violence in the home, drug and/or alcohol abuse by parents or imprisonment of their parents.
Work: Volunteers will have the opportunity to: participate in ongoing courses on topics such as English, gardening, etc. plan their own activities based on individual and group skills and interests and the needs of the children. take the children on Saturday afternoon excursions to the local swimming pool and occasionally on outings to learn about ceramics and artisanship. volunteer on an additional project running Saturday mornings at a town near Ayacucho where volunteers teach life skills to people with physical disabilities.
The purpose of the activities the volunteers will be preparing is to provide the children at the URPI orphanage with lasting, practical skills to carry with them when they are old enough to leave the orphanage such as carpentry, handiwork, handicraft, cooking, baking, etc. Please keep this in mind when developing the activities.
While at URPI, volunteers will be working in a supporting role with the teachers and other permanent volunteers at the orphanage. While the volunteers are responsible for both caring for and disciplining the children, the teachers and other permanent volunteers will help with the more serious disciplinary actions that are required, though these seldom occur.
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in a house in the city which is only a 5 minute walk from URPI and a 20 minute walk from the city-centre. Mototaxis are a readily available and cheap means of transportation in the city. The house has all basic facilities available, including an area to hand-wash clothing. There is no phone or internet in the house but both are easily accessible within a few blocks of the house. Bed frames and foam mats are provided but volunteers must bring their own sleeping bag. Also, an additional air mat would increase comfort but is not a necessity.
Location: The closest airport is “Jorge Chavez” International Airport, Lima, Peru
Language: The official language of the orphanage is SPANISH. The permanent volunteers, teachers and management at URPI speak very little English. For this reason, an intermediate level of Spanish is highly recommended.
Fee: 210 EUROS. This fee covers all of the expenses of the camp, including some leisure activities and weekend excursions, and administration costs needed to organize and run the workcamp. Some of the money also goes directly to URPI to help fund special courses in areas such as dance, music and ceramics.
