WORKCAMPS IN KYRGYZSTAN
Oikos organises in 2011 international workcamps in Kyrgyzistan in cooperation with the association Leadership.
Leadership is a non-profit organization bringing together young volunteers with the mission of involving youth in civil society through volunteerism, project design, and cooperation both locally and internationally. Leadership was founded on November 1, 2005 as a youth volunteer organization under the auspices of the public association Leader, a centre of civic society initiatives.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The projects are open to the volunteers over 18 years old from all over the world.
All the travel costs are carried by the volunteers.
The language of the workcamp is English, for this basic knowledge of English is requested. Skills in Russian will be appreciated.
The participation fee that includes the annual adheration fee of Oikos is 100,00 euros and has to be paid by a bank transfer destinated to the cultural association Oikos at the moment of the application.
The workcamp fee that includes food, accomodation, transportation, recreation and organizational costs during your stay in Kyrgyzistan is 230,00 euros and has to be paid to the local coordinator once arrived to the destination.
What to bring: A more detailed packing list will be sent after applying, a basic list includes: back-pack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, raingear, warm clothes, comfortable shoes for hiking, a swimsuit, sunscreen, insect repellent (much of the time will be spent on the lake shore), a torch, your national recipes, music, songs, games, energy and a good mood!

LS-01 25.07 - 07.08.2011 Ak-Suu LOCATION: Ak-Suu Forest Department (Nursery Forest) is situated in Ak-Suu Village, 15 km from Karakol. The Forest Department was created in 1947 but in 2003 acquired legal status. It is unique because it is the only organization of its kind in Kyrgyzstan. Ak-Suu Forest Department covers 21858 hectares of landscape, 7048 hectares of which are forested. One of the main goals of the Forest Department is forest recovery. According to their goals, every year they plant trees, care for the young seedlings, and protect thesoil. Ak-Suu region is one of the region’s oldest districts, full of hot springs for health and leisure. Surrounded completely by mountains, this location is very picturesque.
WORK:
Project goals:
· Maintain forest nursery through caring for young trees (watering, weeding, trimming, etc).
· Promote eco tourism through developing the Forestry Museum and making wooden souvenirs for visitors.During 2 weeks volunteers will be take care of young trees (seedlings), water, weed, and trim the area of the nursery. During the second week volunteers will take part in developing the Forestry Museum and to produce wooden items for visitors (key chains, coasters, etc.)
Weekend: During the weekend volunteers will visit Jety –Oguz gorge located about 35 km south west of Karakol it is a lush valley with striking red sandstone rock formations (the “seven bulls” from which the valley takes its name and the “Broken Heart”). These two rock formations have become symbols of the Issyk-Kul region. Volunteers will have opportunity to stay in a yurt (traditional Kyrgyz house) for a night and have traditional food.
ACCOMMODATION: Basic cabins with shared rooms. Kitchen supplies will be available. Volunteers will bathe at a former Soviet resort in Ak-Suu where there are bathhouses 2 times per week. Volunteers should bring sleeping bags and mats. Cooking will be done by volunteersin the kitchen with all necessary supplies provided.

LS-02 25.07 - 07.08.2011 Karakol LOCATION: The work camp will take place at the summer homes of Ak-Suu Orphanage in Pristan—14 km from Karakol. Pristan is famous for its Prezhevalski Museum about the Russian researcher of Central Asia.
WORK:
Project goals:
· Organize orphanage children’s leisure time through conducting games, sport competitions, and dance classes.
· Increase people’s awareness about the Orphanage through implementing a mini- project entitled “Childhood Book.”
· Participate in first aid and environmental training sessions for children.
· Participate in daily orphanage activities and spend leisure time with orphanage children.During the project volunteers will conduct English trainings, various games, and sporting events with orphanage children in their leisure time. Volunteers with children will have a chance to participate in a First Aid training session conducted by the Red Crescent Center. The project “Childhood Book,” volunteers and orphanage children will assemble pictures, photos and stories about orphanage life which will be published in a magazine at the end of the camp.
Weekend Excursion: During the weekend volunteers will visit the Jety-Oguz gorge located about 35 km southwest of Karakol, it is a lush valley with striking red sandstone rock formations (the name means “seven bulls”). These two rock formations have become symbols of the Issyk-Kul region. Volunteers will have the opportunity to stay in a yurt (a traditional nomadic Kyrgyz house) for a night and eat traditional food.
ACCOMMODATION: Basic summer shelters at the orphanage, double rooms with single beds. Volunteers will stay in yurts during the weekend excursion. Volunteers will bathe at a former Soviet resort in Ak-Suu where there are bathhouses 2 times per week. Sleeping bags and mats are required. Cooking will be done by volunteers in the kitchen with all necessary supplies provided. Volunteers are requested to take a personal plate and utensil set for the trek, cooking will be done as a group.
