WORKCAMPS IN GREECE
In 2005 OIKOS organises in collaboration with C.V.G. (Conservation Volunteers Greece), a local no-profit organisation, several workcamps in Greece. C.V.G. is a non-profit, non-governmental organization promoting intercultural exchanges between young people from all over the world. C.V.G. activities are funded by several national and local bodies, as the Greek General Secretariat for Youth, European Union “Youth” Program, the Ministry for the Environment, private institutions or foundations, donations etc.
The camps are open to young people over 18 coming from all over the world and have an average duration of 2-3 weeks.
Participation fee (including the annual membership-card of OIKOS) varies in the different projects and has to be paid when applying for a camp. The fee is lower in projects that are financed by local or national authorities.
The camp-fee includes the annual membership of Oikos, board and lodging.
The return ticket for the trip has to be paid by volunteers.

Location:
The project is organized in cooperation with the Foundation of the Hellenic World, which aims at a comprehensive presentation of the history, life, values of Hellenism through exhibitions, presentations and educational programs, mainly for children and young people. The projects will take place in the Cultural Centre of the FHW, the “Hellenic Cosmos”, in the centre of Athens.Work:
Volunteers of CVG15 and CVG16 will be involved with the renovation of different buildings inside the Cultural Centre Hellenic Cosmos, as well as with the landscaping of the Centre. Participants of CVG17, CVG18, CVG19 and CVG20 will also be involved in the summer project for children, “Summer in the City”, by occupying the children with various recreational and educational activities.Accommodation:
Very basic, in a restored building used as an old factory, in the Hellenic Cosmos Cultural Centre. Toilets, showers and cooking facilities will be provided. Volunteers will prepare meals themselves, in shifts.Leisure Time:

Location:
Sport Camp is located in Lehena, a small town near Pyrgos in Peloponnesus. The sport camp will take place in a beautiful camping site, close to the famous Kyllini beach, 60km from Ancient Olympia. The area is endowed with beautiful seashores overlooking the Ionian Sea and with monuments and archaeological sites that reveal the rich historical past. Nearby Kyllini is the gateway that connects the mainland with two of the Ionian Islands, Zakynthos and Kefalonia.Work:
In modern facilities and playgrounds, participants will have the opportunity to practice different sport activities like: basketball, volleyball, football, handball, tennis, beach volley, gymnastics, tae-kwon-do, karate, horseback riding, roller skating, bicycle, canoe, windsurfing etc. Two camp leaders, specialized in athletics, will organize the activities and be responsible for the every day schedule.Accommodation:
In the camping’s cottages, with beds, toilets and showers. All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be provided.Leisure Time:
According to the facilities of the place, camp leaders will organize free time activities together with the participants. Some of these leisure activities that can be organized are visits to the important archaeological sites of the area, excursions to picturesque villages and nearby islands, swimming in white sand beaches, local fiestas, cultural nights etc.Language:

Location:
The "Forest Village Kedros" is located in Epirus, 90km from Arta, capital of the area. Kedros is settled in a 45 acres verdurous area on a 920m altitude, boasting a magnificent view from the hillsides of Mt. Tzoumerka. It is also located 2km from the village Katarraktis, which took its name from two impressive waterfalls (“katarraktes” in greek) in the village. Kedros is the perfect place to explore the mountainous side of Greece.Work:
Volunteers will help in the reconstruction of a footpath network in the Forest Village, construct signposts to be placed along the paths and be involved with the landscaping of the Village.Extra activities:
Participants will have the opportunity to practice outdoor sports, such as trekking on Mt. Tzoumerka, rafting at Arahthos and Kallarytikos rivers, horse riding, archery and rappel.
Accommodation:
In a guesthouse, with bunk beds, toilets and showers. Cooking facilities will be provided. Volunteers will prepare meals themselves, in shifts. Kedros also has a cozy reception area, café-bar, restaurant, mini-market, as well as plenty of outdoor space, beautifully shaped with paved alleys and pergolas.Leisure Time:

Location:
The camp will take place in the beautiful island of Syros, administrative center of the Cyclades prefecture. Close to Piraeus (4h by ferry), Syros is connected by ferry with many Cycladic islands.Work:
The project is organised in cooperation with the French Institute of Athens. Through
various activities, participants will have the opportunity to discover the rich culture and history of this beautiful Greek island. Cultural Workshops: history of the French in Syros, similarities between the French and Greek language, Greek Civilization, Ancient and Modern, Cultural diversity.
Excursions to picturesque villages and fishing ports, tour guide to the archaeological and historical sights of the island traditional dances, handcrafts of Syros.
Intercultural activities: role playing, masque fabrication, drama improvisation.Accommodation:
In the primary school of the traditional Possidonia village, 15min walk from the seaside. The area has many grand villas and mansions - unique buildings in the Cycladic architecture - that were built for the island’s shipping magnates and industrialists. Mattresses, toilets and showers will be provided. All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be provided.
Leisure Time:
In their free time, participants will have the opportunity to swim in the clear waters of the island, discover the everyday life of Syros etc.Language: This is a french speaking project.

The municipality of Mastorohoria is situated high on the mountains, near the Albanian border. Here, life has been standing still in comparison to the rapid changes of big towns elsewhere. There are few inhabitants, who still preserve the traditional way of life, working the land and grazing sheep and goats. The area was once renowned, all over the world, for its stonemasons and traditional architecture, based on stone structure.Work:
Volunteers will help in the maintenance and restoration of various traditional buildings (schools, churches, houses etc). Their main task will be to remove the old plaster from the buildings. Restoring a traditional building to its previous splendor is very rewarding and so is the atmosphere of the villages and the contact with the hospitable local people.
Accommodation:
In the village’s guesthouse. Mattresses, toilets, showers and cooking facilities will be provided but sleeping bags will be needed. Volunteers will prepare meals themselves, in shifts.Leisure Time:

There are few inhabitants, who still preserve the traditional way of life, working the land and grazing sheep and goats. The area was once renowned, all over the world, for its stonemasons and traditional architecture, based on stone structure.Work:
Volunteers will work in the old Kefalohori village (or Likorahi) that was destroyed by an earthquake. They will complete the renovation of St. Paraskevi church that started last year, mainly by removing the old plaster from the walls. They will also remove the plaster from another traditional building that was used both as a municipality office and as a school. If there is time, volunteers will clean up a traditional threshing floor. Restoring a traditional building to its previous splendor is very rewarding and so is the atmosphere of the village and the contact with the hospitable local people.Accommodation:

Hionades is a small traditional village of the Mastorohoria municipality, situated high on the mountains, near the Albanian border. The village was very famous in the 18th and 19th century for its painters and hagiographers, that traveled and worked all over Greece and the Balkans. Today, there is a museum in Hionades dedicated to these artists. Here, life has been standing still in comparison to the rapid changes of big towns elsewhere. There are few inhabitants, who still preserve the traditional way of life, working the land and grazing sheep and goats. The greater area was once renowned, all over the world, for its stonemasons and traditional architecture, based on stone structure.Work:
Volunteers will help in the maintenance and restoration of the St. Nikolaos church, mainly by removing the old plaster from the walls. They will also help in the restoration of an old stone bridge, built in 1800. Restoring a traditional building to its previous splendor is very rewarding and so is the atmosphere of the village and the contact with the hospitable local people.Accommodation:

Ancient Olympia is one of the most important sanctuaries of antiquity, dedicated to the father of gods, Zeus. It is also the birthplace of the Olympic Games that began in 776 B.C. The sanctuary of Olympia spreads around the feet of the Kronion Hill, where the rivers Alpheios and Κladeos meet. This is the 3rd year of the project, whose target is the conservation and reconstruction of a footpath along Kladeos River. Kladeos flows just outside the archaeological site of Anc. Olympia - it is a historical river, depicted on the south pediment of the Temple of Zeus.Accommodation:

Location:
The monastic community of Mount Athos (Holy Mount) is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Officially established in 963, it is the centre of Eastern Orthodox Monasticism, where religious arts and crafts are still practiced to this day. It contains 20 self-governing monasteries and numerous dependent communities, most of which were formed in the 10th/11th centuries. All monasteries are communes. On the north-eastern side of Karyes there is situated the Saint Andrew Skete (a sort of monastery dependent on another one). In 1958 it was largely destroyed by fire and it is now slowly being restored.Work:
Volunteers will remove burnt objects from the monks’ cells and storage areas, be involved in various maintenance and restoration works, reconstruct footpaths that connect the Skete with other monasteries etc.Accommodation:
In the monastery. Accommodation is basic even if beds are provided. Meals will be provided by the monks.Notes:
Participants will have to obey the rules set by the monastery and act accordingly to the monastic canon. Only for motivated male volunteers, since women are not allowed to Mt Athos. Very interesting for photographers, sociologists, historians. Ideal for meditation.Language:

Ai Yorgis is one of the most beautiful on Mt Pelion, with lush vegetation and a spectacular view of the Pagasitikos Gulf. Its houses are stone-built, many of which are traditional mansions. Milies is one of the most picturesque villages on Pelion with distinct old houses and fascinating cobbled paths, providing a profusion of colour throughout most of the season. Style, harmony and beauty are its outstanding characteristics. From the summer of 1996, the little historical steam train "Mountzouris" has started to run again from Volos to Milies, after 25 years. Very close to the old railway station of Milies is a cave which according to history provided shelter to Centaur Chiron who educated Achilles.Work:
